Overview

There are two reasons for checking out a license.

1. You are a Non-SELECT user and License Check-Out is required in order to activate.

2. You are a SELECT user with limited or not internet/network connection.

From the client computer, you can manage the license check in and out from the License Management Tool.

Check Out

Depending on the version of the License Management Tool installed with your application will determine what you see when you first launch the tool.  In the earlier versions, you are automatically placed into the License Checkout screen, in new versions you have to click on the License Checkout Tab.

 08.09.xx.xx and older

 08.11.xx.xx and newer

Once in the License Checkout dialog:

a. Highlight the product in the top box.

b. Select a Check Out Expiration Date from the drop down.  A license can be checked out up to the expiration of the SELECT Contract, or up to 5 years if the site is Non-SELECT.

c. Click the CheckOut Button.

This will launch the Checkout Settings dialog Box, in the Checkout Settings Dialog:

a. Enter your Email Address.

b. Enter the version number, if it did not auto-populate.

c. Click OK. 

You should receive a message stating the Checkout was successful. Click Ok.

Then the Checked-Out license will move to the bottom box.

Check In

1. The Checked-Out license will appear in the bottom box.

2. Highlight the product in the bottom box.

3. Click CheckIn.

Overview

If a client workstation will have limited or no internet/network connection your account may decide to utilize a checked out a license. Licenses can be checked out from the client workstation (see Client Check In and Out Instructions for XM and Higher [TN]) or by a SELECT administrator (see Admin Check In and Out Instructions for XM and Higher [TN]) or by Bentley Licensing Support  .

If the license has been checked out by an administrator or Bentley, an XML file is generated.  Generally these XML files are sent via an email attachment which the client workstation will need to import in order to activate the software.

To save the XML file on the client workstation:

1. Right mouse click on the XML file and select "Save As" from the File Menu.
2. Navigate to the directory where you want to save the file.
3. Click the save button. (File type will be XML Document).
4. Start the License Management Tool.
5. Make sure that you are on the License Checkout Screen.  Some older versions default to this screen, newer versions will need to click on the Tab.
   
6. Go to File>Import.
7. Navigate to the same directory where you saved the license file in step 2 and click Open.
8. Close the License Management Tool by selecting “Exit” from the “File” menu. If the product(s) are currently running, you will need to restart them in order for your new license(s) to take effect.

Why do I get a message stating I am in Disconnected Mode when I start a Bentley Application?

To ensure our users always have fully functional Bentley applications, our Trust Licensing scheme is designed to work offline as affectively as it does online. The license client will make a daily attempt to send log files to SELECTserver. That attempt is typically made when a Bentley application is first run that day. If the license client is unable to send its logs, the application runs in Disconnected Mode. Disconnected Mode is a fully functional mode for running Bentley applications. Disconnected Mode is synonymous with working ‘offline' with SELECTserver. The alert message is displayed simply as a notification that logs were not able to be sent and depending on the application, they will need to be sent within 30 days.

Do I need to re-activate my machine with the Activation Wizard?

If the machine has been successfully activated there is no need to re-activate the machine. Simply click ‘No' to running the Activation Wizard and continue initiating your Bentley application.

Why am I in Disconnected Mode?

A network connection between your workstation and SELECT Server could not be established to send usage log files. This could be due to SELECTserver being busy or unavailable during the time your workstations attempted to send the logs.

Will all my applications' functionality be available in Disconnected Mode?

Yes.

Can I force the logs to be sent?

Yes, open the License Management tool and navigate to Tools > Send Logs Now or press the F9 key. An oscillating dialog will appear while this brief process takes place.

MX & Arenium Footprint Generator 

MX Users
This program generates a footprint file, required to create the authorization code for the MX software products (formerly Infrasoft products). The program should be run on each PC for which a standalone MX license is required, or if a network MX license is required, on each PC which is to be an MX License Server.

Arenium Servers
This program generates a footprint file, required to create the authorization code for Arenium Server. The program should be run on the PC chosen to be an Arenium Server.

Download MX Footprint Generator
Note: The MX Footprint Generator is available from the SELECTservices download page. Go to SELECTservices.Bentley .com and click on Downloads > Web Downloads on the left side menu. Set the search criteria for Application Group equals Enhancements and Updates,  Discipline equals Civil Engineering and Show files posted equals Show All. The file name is Bentley MX Footprint - English.

When you download the MX Footprint Generator, save it to your Temp folder. When you click on the file, it will automatically self-extract and run set-up. An install wizard will open and guide you through the task.
When the wizard asks for your customer ID, use either your sales order number (preferred), Bentley login ID or your Infrasoft customer ID. The wizard will then ask where you wish to save the footprint file.

To receive your authorization code, return the footprint file to:
MX users - your nearest Bentley Administration Center
Arenium users - email address mailto:mxlicensing@bentley.com?Subject=Arenium Footprint file

Overview

RAM, STAAD, AutoPIPE, SACS, MaxSurf, and MultiFrame products must obtain licenses to open, and these licenses are returned when the product is closed. The License Management Tool installed on a workstation is helpful for determining what licenses are available for use, but it is not helpful for determining where those licenses are currently in use. Additionally, the License Management Tool is useful for manually returning licenses on a particular workstation only. Fortunately, SELECTserver provides "site administrators" with a tool called the site administration page that can address this. Licenses can be viewed for the entire site, and licenses can be checked in from this tool if necessary.

The site administration page is accessed using a web browser i.e. Internet Explorer. If your licenses are managed by Bentley's Hosted SELECTserver (called SELECTserver OnLine), go to the following address:
http://selectserver.bentley.com/bss/admin/

A login screen like the one below will appear. A Bentley SELECT login with administrator rights is required to access the "hosted" SELECTserver. If you do not know the identity of your Bentley Site Administrator, or do not have a Site Administrator, please contact Bentley Technical Support for further assistance.

If your licenses are managed on a server of your own running our SELECTserver software (called a "deployed" server), go to the following address, replacing "servername" with the name of your license server:
http://servername/bss/admin/

Once on the site administration web page, locate License Management in the navigation bar along the top. Place your mouse over it, and select Checkedout License List from the drop-down menu.

The following page displays all licenses that are currently in use, complete with the product, user, and computer name. To manually return or "check in" a license, click the Check-In button to the left of a license listing (circled in the screenshot below).

Important: Licenses should only be manually returned if they failed to return to the license server after the program was closed.

Overview

Product Activation is the act of authenticating a product for entitled use.  If you need assistance activating, please see Product Activation.  If you have any trouble activating, please proceed.

If at any point during the below troubleshooting steps you find you need further assistance, please feel free to contact Licensing.

Troubleshooting

1. Be sure you have a basic internet connection and can access a website, or a network connection if you are   
    Deployed.

2. Make sure you can access the administration page for SELECTserver:

• Hosted: http://selectserver.bentley.com/bss/admin/default.aspx
• Deployed:  http://yourservername/bss/admin/default.aspx
  * where "yourservername" is the name of the machine where the SELECTserver software is installed"

3. Once on the Administration Site,  Navigate to "License Management" section and select "View License File."
     
    From this page, confirm the following:

• The SELECTserver has licenses available for the product in question
• The license has a valid expiration date within term of the SELECT Contract

4. From the client workstation where the software is installed, open the License Management Tool.

    From within the License Management Tool, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Options."  
   

    Here confirm or correct the server name and site activation key.

• Due to the length of the site activation key, it is recommended that each user copy and paste the information directly into the license management tool.
• Make sure there are no leading or trailing spaces in either the Server Name or Site Activation Key fields.
• The characters used in the Site Activation Key should all be in CAPS, and the letter “O” is not used, if you see a round character, it is a zero.

     Click "Test Connection". You should get a message stating “SELECT Server and Activation key verified.
   

    You could also get the following messages:

• “An error has occurred while attempting to verify the server and activation key” - This means the server specified could not be reached.

• Check if there are any firewalls that may be preventing the connection to the server. All Communication with the license server is via port 80.
• If license fails to verify, try checking off “Use HTTPS” under protocol, your network may require it.

• “Server does not support this activation key” - This means s connection to the server specified was able to be made, but the Site Activation Key is incorrect. 

• Return to the previous step to confirm Server Name and Site Activation Key.

5. Try forcing a connection from the License Management Tool.  From within the License Management Tool, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Send Logs Now."  This forces the workstation to re-establish connection with the server.  Repeat up to three times.

6. Try to activate on another machine.  If another machine can establish a connection, you'll need to troubleshoot what the difference may be between the computers.

Troubleshooting

1. Check if the license file.

• Be sure the “.LIC” file was saved with the proper extension.  Sometimes notepad will append the extension with a “.TXT” at the end of the license file name, resulting in “[filename].LIC.TXT”.
• File extensions may be hidden. Unhide your file extensions and rename the file, removing the “.txt” from the file name.  For a list of file names and locations, see License File Names V8.

2. A license for this product could not be found.

• When an application starts, it looks in the default licensing directory.  
• This message indicates that the file itself was not found.
• This means that either the file is named incorrectly,  or that the file is in the wrong directory.
• Check to make sure the file is named properly and in the right place.

2. No license usages were found to match your request.

• This message means the license file was found, but did not contain a license usage for the product being launched.
• This could be a problem with the product or version being used.
• Open the license file in Notepad and confirm what product and version it should be running.
• If the license does not contain the product and version needed,  please feel free to contact Licensing. 

3. A Fingerprint (Computer ID) mismatch was encountered between the license and the computer in use.

• Nodelocked licenses, as they are called, are just that; locked to a particular node (i.e. computer) name.
• This prevents one license from being used on multiple machines.
• This error indicates that the name of the computer does not match the name on the license. Note that the error message dialog box lists the actual name of the computer.
• Confirm your computer name:

• Windows 2000: start > settings > control panel > system > network identification
• Windows XP: start > control panel > system > computer name
• To fix this, contact please feel free to contact Licensing.

Product activation is the act of authenticating a product for entitled use.  Most Bentley applications are equipped with several behavioral states to support product evaluations, the activation process, and offline use.  The behavioral state, or Activation Status, can be found in the License Management Tool.  Below are the various states and their definitions.  For more information about Activating your product, see Product Activation.

Trial

• This mode of behavior is the application's evaluation period. The trial mode of behavior must be opted into by the application, so some applications may not yet support this behavior. 
• Trial mode is only reached when an application has NEVER been activated. 
• Once a trial mode is expired, proper Product Activation is required in order to continue using the program.
• The exception to this rule would be certain Structural Products, such as RAM, STAAD, and AutoPIPE, that will always show with a "Trial Expires" status.

 Activated

• An application is activated when it is properly licensed, which is most commonly achieved by connecting to a valid SELECTserver that has a license for the application.

Offline

• Offline mode occurs when an application has been disconnected from SELECTserver for more than 2 days but less than the activation period (up to 30 days in most cases). 
• An application can run in offline mode if its license server cannot be found. The application will run as if activated, providing more than enough time to resolve any unintended disconnection.
• For more information on this offline mode, see Disconnected Mode.

Disabled

• A disabled state is reached when an application has been disconnected from SELECTserver for too long (exceeding its activation and offline modes).  
• An application can only reach this state if it has first reached an activated state.  
• In its disabled state, an application generally runs for a short period of time and then stops. For example, the disabled state for MicroStation runs for 15 minutes and then times out.

Expired

• An application will reach its expired state only when the Trial period has lapsed and the product has not been activated.
• An application can only enter this state if it has NEVER reached an activated state.
• In this state, the application will not run.

Pre-activated (superceded by Trial mode)

• The pre-activated period begins with installation and ends after a defined period (such as 30 days) or with activation, which ever comes first. During this period, most applications run in full-functioning mode, with no limitations applied to their activated state.

Both of these products incorporate Bentley Map functionality without the need for an additional license. They are currently only available in english releases, and need the Desktop Prerequisite 8.11.07.03 version. Normal SELECT licensing procedures apply to this product, meaning that they will utilize site activation keys and server names to obtain licensing from a main server.

Overview

The License Management Tool is delivered with all Bentley Applications versions XM and higher. This tool has multiple functions and is a fundamental tool for managing licenses from the client machine.

The License Management Tool enables you to edit, enter, and confirm your license information, check your activation status, manually make a connection to the server and activate, as well as check a license in and out.  If you need more details on how to check a license in and out from the License Management Tool, please see Client Check In and Out Instructions for XM and Higher.

Locating the License Management Tool 

There are several different ways to access the License Management Tool, depending on the Bentley Application you have installed. Here are a few of the most common methods for locating the License Management Tool:

• Some applications will install a shortcut to the License Management Tool directly into the Start menu. Go to the Windows Start Menu > All Programs > (Your Bentley Program) > License Management Tool.
• If a shortcut to the License Management Tool doesn’t exist in the Start menu, launch the application either by double-clicking the icon or from the Windows Start Menu. If a warning dialog appears telling you the application is not authorized, allow the application to operate in Demo mode. Once in the program, you can consult your products Help File for details on where to locate the License Management Tool from within your product.
• If you are unable to locate the License Management Tool using one of the methods mentioned above, you can search for the .exe file. To do so, open a new search and select All Files and Folders. Then type: licensetool.exe and click search. Launch the licensetool.exe by double clicking the .exe

Enter, Edit, or Confirm Your License Information

Once the License Managament Tool is open, go to Tools> Options.

A separate box will pop up, allowing you to view what license information (if any) has been entered for the workstation. Note: Make sure you are on the SELECTserver tab.

Here you can enter, edit, or just confirm the server name and site activation key are correct. Due to the length of the site activation key, it is recommended that each user copy and paste the information directly into the license management tool.  Also, be sure there are no extra spaces before or after the server name and site activation key as this can prevent a proper activation.

Once the information is entered, press the test connection button. You should receive a message saying “Server and activation key verified.”  If any other messages are received, please contact Technical Support.

Press “apply” and then “ok” to update the changes.

Confirm your Activation Status

Most Bentley Products will show a status of “Activated” once they are properly activated. However, keep in mind that there are some exceptions such as RAM and STAAD.   If you would like to know more about what each of the different Activation Status' mean, please see Product Activation Modes of Behavior.

To confirm your Activation Status, open the License Management Tool .  In newer releases, the default screen will show the Activation Status.

In older versions, you will need to go to Tools>Activation Status.

Manually Make a Connection to the Server and Activate

If you are unsuccessful in activating using the Product Activation Wizard or your programs goes in to Disconnected Mode you can manually force your application to contact the SELECTserver in the License Management Tool.

To manually make a connection to the server and activate, open the License Management Tool.  After you have confirmed your license information (as stated above), go to Tools>Send Logs Now.

Once you select Send Logs Now, you will see a Progress Bar.  Once the Process is complete, the dialog box will disappear.

Your product should now be activated.  You can check the Activation Status as stated above.  If it still does not show as activated, try Sending Logs again.  Sometimes it takes more than one time to establish a connection with the server.  If you continue to have problems, please contact Technical Support.

Overview

Basic information for licensing MicroStation V8.

For SELECT subscribers who are taking advantage of Concurrent Licensing

Create a file called msv8.lic in MicroStation V8's licensing folder (by default, C:\Program Files\Bentley\Program\Licensing\) and point to the computer name on which SELECTserver is currently running (just like you would in MicroStation/J).

As an alternative, if you have an existing msj.lic file that you are using to access SELECTserver from MicroStation/J, copy that file to MicroStation V8's licensing folder (by default, C:\Program Files\Bentley\Program\Licensing\) and then rename the file to msv8.lic (MicroStation V8 will not recognize msj.lic as a valid license file).

For individually licensed computers (nodelocked)

If you purchased a new commercial license for MicroStation V8, the steps to license the product are:

Install MicroStation V8.
When you start the product, a Licensing Information dialog box appears. Use the information that it provides when licensing the product. If you are not taking advantage of SELECTserver, this is what is used to generate your unique license number.
Fill out the appropriate Licensing Form on the Bentley Web site or fill out the Software Licensing Form and mail or fax it to the Sales Support Group that services your area.

NOTE: If you are a SELECT subscriber, you should receive a SELECT certificate instead of having to fill out any licensing information. If you license this product electronically, you do not need to fill out the Software Licensing Form (or Card). If you do use the Software Licensing Form (or Card), please type in the information or print clearly. If you mail the Software Licensing Form (or Card), please make sure that you retain a copy for your records.

If you would like to make your MicroStation/J license work with MicroStation V8, follow these steps:

Install MicroStation V8.
Go to SELECTservices Online.
Go to My Support Account > License Tool in the menu to the left.
Enter the MicroStation/J serial number that you wish to upgrade.
Click on the Upgrade button to make applicable changes.

Overview

Machine and Server Name Changes specifically apply to Pre-XM, file based, Licensing.  With this file based licensing, both SELECTserver V8 and Nodelock V8 license files are encrypted to a specific workstation, defined by the machine name.  When Pre-XM Bentley Software is installed onto a new machine, a new license file must be generated for the new machine. 

To make or request a Machine or Server Name Change, a user's web login must have the Site Administrator or License Manager Role.

Changing a Machine Name

1. Navigate to the SELECTservices Website: http://selectservices.bentley.com.
2. From the Support page click on License Tool under Account Management.
   

1. A Multi-Site Administrator will have to select the site they wish to view, otherwise the Administrator is taken direcly to the License Tool page.

2. Click on the View button under SELECTserver(s) or Nodelocks and Unassigned, depending on which you need to modify.

3. Once you can view the licenses, click on the Manage hyperlink to the right of the license you wish to modify.

4. Once on the Manage page, change the radio button to Move License File.  Then enter the new machine anme in the New Machine Name field.

5. Finally, enter your email address into the Email confirmation to field (or the address where you'd like to send the file) and click Sent It.

What is Product Activation?

Product Activation is the act of authenticating a product for entitled use. Most Bentley applications are equipped with several behavioral states to support product evaluations, the activation process, and offline use.   For more about behavior states, please see Product Activation Modes of Behavior.   An application is activated when it is licensed, which is most commonly achieved by connecting to a valid SELECTserver that has a license for the application.

How do I activate my Bentley Application?

How you activate your Bentley Product will be determined by the version of licensing you are configured for as well product version.  License information is provided to a Bentley Site Administrator or License Manager.  The Site Administrator or License Manager may then distribute the license information at his/her discretion.   Once you have your license information, you'll need to determine your activation type.  Please see the following TechNotes for details of activating:

Non-SELECT/Nodelock XM/V8i

Do I have to activate every Bentley application I install on my machine?

No, the activation is stored in the registry.  After one product successfully activates, products installed thereafter will automatically detect the license information and will activate.

At the end of the activation wizard, there is a screen to check out a license. Do I need to check out a license in order to run my application? 

No, this option is provided for those users who will not have a periodic connection to their SELECTserver to send log files.

What happened to MicroStation's 15-minute "Demo Mode"? 

MicroStation still has a 15-minute time-out mode, which is invoked after the 30-day Activation period has lapsed. This is also referred to as "deactivated behavior".  

How does activation work for a large site? Will SELECTserver allow a system administrator to activate machines in batch mode? 

SELECTserver is not designed to pre-activate a desktop application, although there is a way to activate desktops in an efficient manner. XM Licensing provides support for Microsoft's Group policy settings, for more details, please see Activating Client Side Products and Registry Basics

Is the 30-day activation period also available to pre-XM applications? If so, are there any special settings that need to be applied? 

Pre-XM applications require a real-time connection requirement with the SELECTserver.  However, when licensing Pre-XM applications with the SELECTserver Gateway Service it is important to understand that the SELECTserver Gateway is, in fact, an XM application.  Therefore, it has the benefit of working in a disconnected mode for up to 30 days, which enables the applications it serves to run, as long as it's activated itself and contains license for the product in question. 

The difference for a pre-XM application is that the 30-day pre-activation period is at a Site level, not a machine level. So if I begin using it on August 1st, I am starting the 30-day period on behalf of every user at the Site. If someone else tries to use it on September 3rd (and our site still doesn't have a license), the pre-activation period is already over (>30 days) and they will enter the application's deactivated behavior, which is likely a 15-min timeout mode.

An administrator installed and activated my product. Why does the product fail to activate when run from my user account?

If an administrator activates a product while logged in as a different user, the license settings are typically stored for that user account only, not for all user accounts on the computer. To check whether the license settings are stored in your user account, perform the following steps:

1. Open the License Management Tool. Most products provide a way to open this tool from the Windows Start menu or from within the product.
2. You may receive a dialog box with the following message which can be dismissed:
   All settings will be stored for current user only.
3. In the window that appears, select Options from the Tools menu.
4. Verify whether a server name and site activation key are entered. If blank, get them from your site administrator. Once entered, your product should successfully activate.

Overview

In order to run a Pre-XM Bentley Product with Server Based Licensing, usually a SELECTserver Gateway, it is important to understand how to tell you Bentley Product to talk to the License Server.

The client machine, running Pre-XM applications, talks to the SELECTserver using a pointer file.

A pointer license file is a basic notepad text file with a .lic extension which is saved in the licensing directory on the client computer.

In order to create a pointer file, you'll first need to locate the .lic file for your product.  For a list of license file names and locations.  A list of license file names and default licensing directories for each product can be found on BE Communities at the following link: http://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/2668.aspx

If a .lic file does not exist, one must be created.  Please see steps below to create a pointer file.

1. Open Notepad to start a new file.

2. Type Text: SERVER="YourServerName"

This will be the only text in this file.

"YourServerName" is the name of the computer where SELECTserver License Manager is installed or the Gateway Services if you are running.

If you are not using DNS or WINS for IP-to-name resolution you will need to add the following line: SERVER="YourServerName" IPADDRESS="xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is your server's actual IP address.

3. Click File > Save As

4. In the Save As dialog, change the file type to "All Files"

5. Browse to the proper licensing location for your product and version.

6. Name the file to match product and version you are using.

7. Click the Save button.
