Overview

Sometimes older versions of Bentley's IEG licensing software cannot be successfully uninstalled via the Add or Remove Programs control panel. This can pose a problem as newer versions may refuse to install unless older versions of the software are removed first. Following are steps to accomplish this manually. Please note that administrator access is required.

If running Windows XP, select Run from the Windows Start menu, type "regedit" in the field, and click the OK button. If running Windows Vista or 7, select All Programs -> Accessories -> Run from the Windows Start menu, type "regedit" in the field, and click the OK button. This will launch the Registry Editor, a utility for viewing and modifying the configuration database for various Windows programs.

First locate the entries on the left pane. These folders are known as keys. Expanding the plus boxes at the left of each key will reveal it's contents. Navigate to the following location in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Expand the Uninstall key to reveal a list of keys with names composed of numbers and letters in curly braces. These names guarantee that an installed program has a unique name in this list. To determine which of these keys are IEG-related, select each one, and look in the right pane at the DisplayName attribute. If the words Bentley and IEG appear anywhere in the DisplayName attribute, right-click on the key in the left pane, and select Delete from the contextual menu to remove it. You can proceed to the next step when you get to keys that have readable names.

Now navigate to the following location in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products

Expand the Products key to reveal another list of keys with names composed of numbers and letters in curly braces. Select each key, and examine the value for the ProductName attribute. If the words Bentley and IEG are present, delete the key. Once finished, close the Registry Editor.

A newer version of the Bentley IEG License Service should successfully install now.

Background

IEG Applications require that licensing information is valid, but also that the license is able to be checked out, which may require additional work on the license server.

Steps to Accomplish

Please make sure that the licenses are available via the SELECTserver (Applies to hosted and deployed licensing).

On the SELECTserver Administraton site you should check :

  • Click on "Bentley" in the upper right corner to get to the imitial SELECTserver page and make sure there are no errors w/ the SELECTServer (typically errors will be in red).
  • "License Management -> View License File" to make sure the licenses are there, and have valid expiration dates (dates in the future).
  • "Site Configuration -> Site Settings" to make sure license checkout is enabled.
  • "Site Configuration -> Client Access Restrictions" to make sure the that either "Access Restrictions are Disabled", or that if "Access Restrictions are Enabled" that the target user / machine is in the access list.
  • "Site Settings -> Checkout Restrictions" to make sure the that STAAD products are able to be checked out. (Note: If NO applications are selected as "Available for Check Out," by default ALL licenses will available for users to check out.)
  • "License Management -> Checkedout Licenses" to make sure all available licenses aren't checked out already.

On the License Management Tool on the workstation you should check :

  • "Tools -> Options", make sure you can verify the server name / site activation key by clicking "Test Connection" [Note if Site Activation Key is part of a "Custom Activation Group" that the "Custom Activation Group" defined on the server under "Site Configuration -> Custom Activation Groups" has to include the target application).
  • "License Checkout" tab, make sure the product you are trying to activate appears on the upper half of the screen with a quantity greater that 0, indicating that the license is available for checkout.

Are there any differences between the reports generated by a deployed SELECTserver and those transmitted to Bentley?

The reports are essentially the same, although no proprietary account information is transmitted from the account to Bentley's Web Services. Instead, machine or user names generally viewable from an account's administrative pages are replaced by hashed values using a multi-pass, one-way encryption (SHA1) technique. This one-way hash provides a means for Bentley to uniquely identify a machine or a user. An encrypted machine or user name cannot be reverse engineered to produce its original name.

Does SELECTserver perform any encryption on network transmissions or data?

SELECTserver obscures machine and user names in the processing of transmitted reports to Bentley, but does no other encryption on any other data. SELECTserver relies on Microsoft IIS and SSL to encrypt network transmissions. All network communications are standard network protocols and, as such, can be routed through any standard network security mechanism.

What information is transmitted in a usage report sent to Bentley?

There is no proprietary or personal information in usage reports that are transmitted to Bentley. SELECTserver supports the Secure Socket Layer (SSL), so all transmissions are secure.

Desktop-to-SELECTserver Communications
Product Activation / License Checkout

* Product ID
* Product Version Number
* Machine Name

* Windows Machine Name
* Windows Account User Name
* Activation Key
* Date and time application/tool was started
* Date and time application/tool was shut down

SELECTserver-to-Bentley.com Communications
License Request for a Deployed SELECTserver

* SELECTserver activation key
* SELECTserver serial number
* Windows Machine Name

Usage Reports

* SELECTserver version number
* SELECTserver serial number
* SELECT Site ID
* Product (application/tool) ID
* Product (application/tool) version
* Max usages statistics
* SHA1-Encrypted Machine Name
* SHA1-Encrypted User Name

What network protocols will be used, and what ports will need to be open?

SELECTserver uses HTTP and HTTPS.

The Bentley applications do not determine the internet communication ports. By default the ports are 80 ( normal internet traffic) and 443 (Secure Socket Layer “SSL). These ports can be different but if they are please check with your IT department. That would be an internal configuration and it is not controlled by the SELECTServer application.

The information below defines the specific Bentley communication sites. At worst case the IT team will be able to make exceptions for the Bentley site or just TRUST *.bentley.com

http://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/6857.aspx

What Bentley (DNS) domains does my SELECT Server need to have access to?

buddi.bentley.com
loginnet.bentley.com
selectserver.bentley.com
appsnet.bentley.com
ssla.bentley.com

The SELECTserver Gateway still uses a proprietary protocol on port 3998 to communicate with pre-XM applications.

In all cases Bentley applications will initiate the communications with the SELECTserver. Data flows from the client machine to SELECTserver; from SELECTserver it is summarized and usage logs are transmitted via secure web services to Bentley.

Who has access to the administrative pages for my company's Sites on SELECTserver Online?

Only those SELECT Online subscribers who have "License Administration Rights", as defined by Bentley's CRM system, have access to the administration pages of their site(s) on SELECTserver OnLine.

Does Bentley remotely access SELECTservers at a user's site?

No. All communication between a deployed SELECTserver and Bentley's Web Services are controlled by the account.

Can I obtain a fail-over license to prevent against catastrophe?

There will be no need to replace redundant licenses that have been issued for the purposes of fail-over or redundancy. SELECTserver is built on standard Microsoft technologies that are well-suited for clustering or other techniques used to safeguard application servers. In addition, SELECTserver is no longer a real-time license server, so if a connection is lost, licensed applications are still able to run in full-functioning mode.

I can't connect my SELECTserver to the Internet! How do I manually transmit my usage logs to and update my license from Bentley?

SELECTserver includes alternate, manual procedures for transmitting usage reports to Bentley and downloading license updates. You must set SELECTserver to transmit application usage logs manually on the Server Settings administrative page. Logs need to be prepared and sent to Bentley monthly in order to keep SELECTserver activated. A number of alternatives exist for transmitting the reports, including:

* Upload the file(s) via the web
* Email the file(s)
* Mail the files on CD to Bentley

An Acknowledgment File will need to be processed each time a report is transmitted in order to reset SELECTserver.

The SQLExpress application is developed  by the Microsoft corporation. There is no "special "Bentley" build of the SQL Express application. The application delivered is the exact same version available for free from Microsoft.  The nameing conventions discussed in this docuement are generic. You can use names more specifc to your environment. For example naming the databse SQLExpress_2012 was just a choice. You can very well name the databse (abc123) as long as you are consistent with identifying the databes by that desginated name.

Creating an Instance of an SQL Database

Navigate to the SelectServer_09_xx_xx_xx folder (by default this is
found at c\bentleydownloads) and choose the SQLEXPR3_2.EXE OR SQLEXPR_64.EXE and
take the following steps.

For this example I am iinstalling SQL 2012 on a Server 2008 R2 64 bit.. The process is exactly the same for SQL server 2008 and 20012.

Run SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe:  Right-Click (RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR). Be Patient.

GO to OPTIONS and ensure you install the version that matches your System (32 or 64 ) bits.

Go to INSTALLATION and SELECT: New SQL Standalone installation (upper right)

Accept the Licensing

Terms:

Instance Configuration: Name the instance: NEXT. For this example I choose SQLExpress_2012

Server configurations: Take the Defaults and NEXT

Database Engine Configuration:
Choose MIXED Mode and enter a “STRONG WINDOWS“password.  Select NEXT

Error Reporting:  (DEFAULT) NEXT

Installing Progress:

Complete:  CLOSE

CLOSE THE SQL SERVER INSTALLER CENTER!!!!!

Configuring the installed SELECTServer application to use the the new SQL Express instance.

Open the Database Setup Tool for the START button.

Direct the application to the new INSTANCE NAME in our case "SQLExpress_2012" and enter the proper password for the INSTANCE. The user name is still “sa”.  SELECT OK

Create a new Database: Select the “NEW” button and name the database.

It will now tell you the database is not configured so select “OK” to allow the system to build the database schema.

You’ll see the scripts run

Database Setup Tool dialog box closes.

Open the Administrative site and follow normal configurations steps using the SELECTServer installation wizard.

I am going to be unable to explain why your server will not install SQL Express automatically. I recommend that you leave the SELECTServer application installed and do a manul ainstalltion of the SQL Express application. The SQLExpress application is developed  by the Microsoft corporation. There is no "special "Bentley" build of the SQL Express application. The application delivered is the exact same version available for free from Microsoft. Forum Post: Re: Silently Activate GEOPAK Civil Engineering Suite

I can't say I'm terribly pleased with this answer and I know my users won't be either. Basically this is Bentley saying they don't support mass deployment of their software within large organizations with a fluid user base/workstation model. My users will have to activate GEOPAK every time they want to use it since there's no vendor supported method for doing so at install time and manually activating hundreds of installs by hand is, to say the least, unfeasible for our deployment team.

This isn't 1996 anymore and most medium to large organizations don't do software deployment by hand. We certainly don't give our users admin rights either. It's 2013 and we use an automated software deployment infrastructure that depends on a silent software deployment, including necessary activations. It would be fantastic if Bentley could accommodate their customers that have more than a handful of installations within their organization.

SERVER:

            From the top there is no real procedure for moving the SELECTserver application. To place it on a new server
you install the application on the new server. The Serial number and activation keys are not server specific so you would use the exact same keys that you did for the initial installation. That information is site specifc and available from the Site Administrator or contacting the Bentley Product Activation (licensing) team.

            The next think that comes into play is the database management. In a fully functional SELECTserver the Usage information is updated to Bentley on a daily basis. This makes the value of the information in your old database only as high as you make it. You can do the following;

a)     Install the new SQL Express and create a new instance and database during the install

b)     Installthe new SQL Express and create a new instance.

1) Back up the old database using SQL Studio Management Tools (Microsoft download)

2) Restore it to the new SQL Express instance using SQL Studio Management Tools

3) Use the Bentley SELECTserver Database Setup tool to direct the SELECTServer application to the backed up and restored database.

Remember Bentley has no preference in this process.
Before installing ensure the technical requirements are met on the new server.

I would highly recommend that you download and install the latest release of the SELECTserver application. It is version number 09.00.00.113 an available from our SELECTservices website. Ensure that you get the version that matches your Operating System either 32 or 64 bits. They are clearly marked. I would not consider this an upgrade even if you install the newer version because you are installing on a system where the application didn’t exist. Please update me by return e-mail if you have any specific questions.

CLIENTS:

                The term I like to use is that “there is no magic to licensing” The three rules of licensing are as follows

ACCESS (connectivity)
What did you ask for?
What do you have?

There is no special procedures for connecting clients to the SELECTserver, it works exactly as it does now. The clients must be directed to the new server according to how the particular application licenses.

Legacy applications have a local license file like “MSV8.LIC”. When using SELECTserver it will contain some “pointer information telling the application where to go to get a license. In these clients the pointer will need to be redirected to the new server name.

Newer applications (XM, V8i,etc) use the license management tool to define the server name and the proper application key. The server name will need to be updated to the new location of the SELECTserver.

Please contact  Bentley Technical Support if you need additional assistance or have any other questions with this issue's status at http://www.bentley.com/serviceticketmanager or call 1-800-778-4277.

Overview

All version 8.9 or newer software is activated against a SELECTserver license server.

Activation of the software is achieved by entering a server name and site activation key into the product. The Server Name and Site activation key are entered into the "Product Activation Wizard" or into the “License ManagementTool”.

There are two different ways to use the SELECTserver

  1. Hosted: Your applications connect directly to a Bentley Hosted SELECTserver via the internet using the server name selectserver.bentley.com.  If you are using the Hosted SELECTserver, please see Activating Against the Bentley Hosted SELECTserver for activation instructions.
  2. Deployed: With Bentley approval, you have a SELECTserver installed locally. Your applications connect to your locally installed SELECTserver using your local server name.  The SELECTserver itself connects to a Bentley server to pull down a list of products.

For SELECT users with Deployed Licenses...

Product Activation Wizard Instructions

You may be put straight into the “Product Activation Wizard,” If the Product Activation Wizard does not prompt upon launching the application, you can actiavte using the License Mangement Tool.

Once in the Product Activation Wizard, you are given the following options:

  • SELECT subscriber activating against a hosted (Bentley) SELECT Server.
  • "SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECT server.
  • NON-SELECT or Node locked user
  • Evaluation Only – No license information

You will want to verify that SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECTserver is selected.

Once selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

When selecting the "SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECTserver," the server name and Site Activation Key will be blank.

Fill in the Server Name in the Server Name box.  The Server Name will be the name of the machine name running the SELECTserver service.

Fill in the Site Activation Key in the Site Activation Key box. Due to the length of the site activation key, it is recommended that each user copy and paste the information directly into the license management tool.  Also, be sure there are no extra spaces before or after the server name and site activation key as this can prevent a proper activation.

Once completed, select Next>

Depending on what version of software in being installed, the country where the product will be in use may have to be selected.

Once a country of use is selected, Next>

The following screen is titled "License Checkout". Please note that using a checked out license is only intended if you will be without an internet connection for an extended period of time. If you will be connected to the internet at most times, a checked out license is not needed, and you can select Next> to Finish activation.

If the Product Activation Wizard does not prompt upon launching the application, you can actiavte using the License Mangement Tool.

For further instructions on activating specific products, such as the Bentley Haestad (Municipal) Products, please see the Product Specific Licensing section of our License TechNotes.

For NON-SELECT users, the server name will be ProductActivation.bentley.com.

Obtaining your Bentley Software License

Your Products need to connect SELECTserver OnLine in order to authenticate and check-out your license. Once the check-out is successful, you will not need to keep a connection to SELECTserver OnLine.

In order to activate and check-out a license you will need to enter an activation key and server name into the product when it starts up after installation, then continue with a license check-out.  This will remove the license from SELECTserver OnLine and make it available on the machine on which you performed the check-out.  Once again, this machine will no longer need to connect to SELECTserver OnLine until you need to renew it or move it to another machine. Please see below for the activation details.

Product Activation Wizard Instructions

You may be put straight into the “Product Activation Wizard,” If the Product Activation Wizard does not prompt upon launching the application, you can actiavte using the License Mangement Tool.

  • NON-SELECT or Node locked user
  • Evaluation Only – No license information

You will want to verify that NON-SELECT or Node locked user is selected.

Once selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

On the next screen, you will be asked about your "License Information."  You are given the following options:

  • I have a license file ready to import
  • I have an activation key
  • I do not have any licensing information

Typically you will have an activation key to activate with. This is sent through fulfillment documentation once the perpetual license is created.

Once selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

When selecting the "NON-SELECT or Node locked user," the server name will be filled in by default.

Fill in the Site Activation Key in the Site Activation Key box. Due to the length of the site activation key, it is recommended that each user copy and paste the information directly into the license management tool.  Also, be sure there are no extra spaces before or after the server name and site activation key as this can prevent a proper activation.

Once a "Country of Use" is selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

On the next screen, you are prompted with a "License Checkout" dialog.  As a NON-SELECT user, you must use a checked out license.

The box next to "Use a checked out license," should be checked by default, but if it is not, be sure to do so.  Fill out all fields on the License Checkout screen.

Once completed, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

The final screen will give you a summary of the licensing activation you just processed.  Click "Finish."

You're product is now activated and ready for use!

Please Note:

Non-SELECT licensing is version and machine specific. You may not freely switch between different versions of the same application.

If you require the ability to run multiple versions of the same software, you may wish to investigate Bentley SELECT. In many instances the licensing options available under SELECT will allow you to run multiple versions of the same application.

More information about SELECT can be found here:

  • Evaluation Only – No license information

You will want to verify that "SELECT subscriber activating against a hosted (Bentley) SELECTserver" is selected.

Once selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

When selecting the "SELECT subscriber activating against a hosted (Bentley) SELECTserver," the server name will be filled in by default.

Overview

As a SELECT user, you may decide to check out a license if the client machine will have limited or not internet/network connection.

Checking out a license is generally managed from the client computer, for instructions, please see Client Check In and Out Instructions for XM and Higher.

If there is a problem with the client check out, or the computer cannot connect to the server even one time, a Site Administrator or Licens Manager can check out a license from the SELECTserver Administration Site.

To check out a license from SELECTserver Administration Site, open the Admin Page

  1. Hosted: http://selectserver.bentley.com/bss/admin/default.aspx
  2. Deployed:  http://yourservername/bss/admin/default.aspx
    * where "yourservername" is the name of the machine where the SELECTserver software is installed*

Check Out

From the Navigation Bar, go to License Management, then, depending on the version of SELECTserver, click on License Checkout or Checkout A License.

Select the desired application from the products listed and click the Next button.  If there are no products listed, they may need to be made available for checkout under "Checkout Restrictions."

Enter the necessary information:

  1. Computer Name
  2. User’s Name
  3. User’s Email Address
  4. Expiration Date
  5. Version Number

Click Ok.

Next, click Download License to save the license to the machine or Click Email License to send the license file attached to an Email.

Check In

The license must be checked back in from the License Management Tool on the Client Machine.  However, with products such as RAM, STAAD, & AutoPIPE, there may be a need to Check Licenses In from the Admin Page.  For more details,  see Viewing And Checking In Licenses Using The Site Administration Page.

What are Custom Activation Groups?

Custom Activation Groups are site activation keys that allow your organization to provide users with valid licensing information without releasing your organization’s primary site activation key. Custom Activation Groups can be created for specific products with specific expiration dates within the product and date constraints of your license pool and SELECT agreement.

Utilizing a Custom Activation Group allows for the sub-division of your site’s license pool for distribution to various designated groups while also allowing for usage tracking. Application usage for Custom Activation Groups is recorded against the main site to which the key is created, and there are multiple reports available in the SELECTserver interface which can be used to view the usage data.

Who Can Use a Custom Activation Group?

Typically, Custom Activation Groups are utilized by organizations that have internal departments sharing a license pool but want to limit the applications available to each group. However, Custom Activation Groups can be utilized in many other scenarios where your organization collaborates with others (such as contractors or project participants).

Since a Custom Activation Group is just a type of sub-division of your organization’s license pool, the activation information can be used anywhere your primary site activation key can be used. Client machines will connect to your organization’s SELECTserver in order to activate.

  • If your organization utilizes SELECTserver OnLine (Bentley Hosted server), then users will only need access to the internet.
  • If your organization does not utilize SELECTserver Online, and maintains SELECTserver locally, your Site Administrator will be responsible for interfacing with your organization’s IT Support in order to grant users access to your SELECTserver.

How do I Create a Custom Activation Group?

Access to your organization’s SELECTserver Administration Page is required to create a Custom Activation Group. (For organizations utilizing SELECTserver OnLine, a Bentley Login and Password is required with the appropriate permissions.)

1. Navigate to your SELECTserver Administration Page. From the Navigation Bar, go to Site Configuration, then, Custom Activation Groups.

      • If your SELECTserver manages multiple sites, choose the desired site from the “Select a site to configure” dropdown.

2. Click the New Group button.

3. A pop up box requesting the following information will appear.

      • The Group ID will auto fill based on your site ID as well as the number of Custom Activation Groups you have already created, i.e. “Your Site ID-01,” “Your Site ID-02,” etc.
      • The Activation Key will also auto populate with a unique sub-key that begins with the letters VS.

4. Enter a Group Name. (A Group Description is optional.)

5. Click the Check Box to select the applications available via the Custom Activation Group.

      • If restrictions are not configured, then all of the site’s applications will be available for use.

      • The products listed in the Application list will display based on the products available in your License Pool.
      • It is not possible to restrict the quantity of licenses. The quantity of licenses available for each product will be the quantity available on the main site activation key.

How Do I activate with a Custom Activation Group?

Click here for detailed information on activating an application based on your organization’s SELECTserver configuration.
