Where can I find the best and most up-to-date information on Trust Licensing and SELECTserver?

Answer: The best place to go for this type of information is http://www.bentley.com/selectserver. Bentley colleagues have assembled some great information on this site. In addition, the Bentley discussion groups on MicroStation Administration are another great source of related topics.

What's different about how Bentley has implemented licensing in the V8 XM Edition?

Answer: The fundamental difference in XM-based Trust Licensing is that licensed applications can operate in a disconnected mode. In that, XM Edition and newer applications no longer require a constant connection to the license server, as long as they can connect at least once every 30 days. This is to ensure that users are not denied use of their mission-critical applications from Bentley.

Applications can be installed on many machines and there is a "usage count" in the license file (called a "Site" on SELECTserver). There's a fundamental difference in the "handshake" between the client and the license server, though, in the new SELECTserver. In the past, the handshake is based on a license request from the client application and a corresponding license grant by the server. If successful, the client will emit a "heartbeat" as long as the session is open. This is how SELECTserver historically determined that the license is in use and how usage was compiled. The problem with this model is that it requires a real-time connection to the license server and puts it in a precarious, mission-critical position. If this connection was broken or not available, users could not run their applications.

In Trust Licensing with SELECTserver, the model is different. Instead of a request-grant handshake, the application records usage locally. When a daily connection is made with the license server, the desktop application posts its usage log, including the application, version, and duration of use. In effect, the desktop is telling its SELECTserver, "This is what I used since the last time I was connected to post usage". This change in behavior puts SELECTserver into a position of primarily tracking and reporting usage, not granting licenses or enforcing the right for an application to run. And it ensures that users always "get a license", even if they are all used up at the time.

How does reporting work in SELECTserver?

Answer: Individual desktop machines log usage statistics for the application installed and running on that machine. Desktops post their logs to SELECTserver daily, or whenever they can achieve a connection. SELECTserver compiles individual logs into reports on a site-wide basis. SELECTserver transmits usage reports to Bentley on a daily basis, or whenever SELECTserver can successfully connect to Bentley's licensing Web Services.

What are my options for licensing XM and V8i Edition applications?

Answer: You do NOT have to be running XM Edition applications to take advantage of SELECTserver. You could choose to run the new server with Gateways even if you are not running any XM or V8applications. With that said, you have three different options for activating and licensing XM Edition applications:

  • SELECTserver OnLine - Alternatively, users of XM or V8i applications can have Bentley host licensing for them. In this case, we provide a hosted SELECTserver Site(s) for the account that they activate their applications against. This option requires Internet connectivity at least once monthly for each machine that is running an XM or newer application, including servers.
  • Deploy and manage your own SELECTserver - This would include the deployment of SELECTserver Gateways for accounts that are using our products today. The Gateway acts as a proxy for the existing SELECTserver and allows for existing applications (i.e., 2004E) to work without having to re-license them for the new SELECTserver (as long as the Gateway is installed on the same machine they are using today).
  • Non-SELECT users - Non-SELECT users of Bentley applications will activate their products against a hosted activation site. This requires a one-time Internet connection in order to download a license, thereby activating the product.

Does my SELECTserver need to be connected to the Internet?

Answer: We recommend that SELECTserver has access to the Internet. This will make routine transactions, like transmitting usage reports and downloading updated license files, much more convenient. All transactions are performed under HTTPS protocol, and no proprietary information will be included in the transmitted reports.

There is a manual alternative to transmit usage reports in order to maintain activation, and it does not require SELECTserver itself to be connected to the Internet.

How is a "Site" used in XM Licensing, as defined by a Bentley SELECT Agreement?

Answer: XM Edition applications, including SELECTserver, understand the concept of a SELECT Site. The requesting application identifies itself with a Site through the activation process. If the license server manages that Site, and has a corresponding application usage in the license file, then the application can be activated.

Can I get a node-locked license for MicroStation XM or V8i?

Answer: A SELECT subscriber who has deployed a SELECTserver or uses Bentley-hosted licensing will use a check-out license to serve the needs of node-locked style licenses. A license can be checked-out directly by the user of the target machine, or indirectly by a system administrator, on behalf of the target user. The ability for a user to check out licenses can also be controlled by the administrator. A checked-out license has a length defined by the administrator. There is a default length of one year, but it can be extended to the SELECT Agreement renewal date. Longer check-out periods are available, upon request.

For non-SELECT users, products are activated through a one-time check-out from a hosted site. Alternatively, Bentley can email the user a checked-out license. This process replaces node-locked license files for XM Edition and V8i applications.

How is pooled usage defined?

Answer: SELECT subscriber entitlement of pooled usage of Bentley desktop applications is defined in the 2004 Bentley SELECT Agreement. For pooled applications, SELECTserver tracks usage by machine and reports usage based on 1-hour intervals. Two requirements were drivers in the definition of this one-hour reporting interval.

First, Bentley was required to define a common reporting interval for all Bentley products managed and licensed by SELECTserver. This included a wide spectrum of poolable applications and the one-hour interval is the most obvious and reasonable interval for the requirements of distributed AEC workflows.

The requirement to provide a disconnected use licensing model for Bentley users was also a significant design influence on the new SELECTserver. Disconnected use of Bentley applications means that users will theoretically never be shut out of a mission critical Bentley application. That, in turn, resulted in a local usage logging mechanism and a need for a practical interval under which to log and report usage. Once again, the obvious choice was one hour, which is the fundamental unit of work throughout the AEC industry.

It is important to note here that named user licenses are not pooled, and are entitled to and tracked by users, not machines.

Upgrading Notes

All SELECTserver OnLine users (hosted option), upgrades are managed by Bentley's SELECTserver Team.  As such there is no need for the user to preform an upgrade for SELECTserver.  The user may still choose to upgrade their SELECTserver Gateway Service at any time.

When upgrading your deployed SELECTserver to the current version, you must first uninstall the old SELECTserver XM before installing the current version.  To retain the serial number, activation keys, and database connection string, do not check the box to remove settings when uninstalling from add/remove programs.

The SELECTserver Gateway service requires a SELECTserver version greater than 8.9.3.36. The "SELECTserver Gateway" will not start unless the SELECTserver it is configured to connect to is version 8.9.3.37 or higher. For this reason it is recommended that you upgrade your central SELECTserver and then any standalone gateways. Previous version of the SELECTserver XM Gateway will continue to run against the newer SELECTserver version.

Which SELECTserver Component(s) Do I Need To Install?

SELECTserver now provides an option to deploy SELECTserver at your location or have Bentley host your licenses for you. Your company's decision to host or deploy determines which SELECTserver component(s), if any, need to be installed. Additional information to help you decide which option is right for your company can be found here.

http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Products/SELECT+Server/Hosted-Deployed.htm

If you wish to Deploy SELECTserver locally at your site, you should install:

* SELECTserver and, if you need to run pre-XM Edition applications, the
* SELECTserver Gateway service *

If you wish to have Bentley host your licenses:

* SELECTserver Gateway service *

* The SELECTserver XM Gateway service provides licensing backward compatibility to 2004 Edition and earlier versions. Therefore, the Gateway service is only required IF these applications will be run at your site.

Overview

The SELECT Server XM Gateway requires a SELECT Server version greater than 8.9.3.36. The "Bentley SELECT Server Gateway" will not start unless the SELECT Server it is configured to connect to is version 8.9.3.37 or higher. For this reason it is recommended that you upgrade your central SELECT Server and then any standalone gateways. Previous version of the SELECT Server XM Gateway will continue to run against the newer SELECT Server version.

Which SELECT Server XM Component(s) Do I Need To Install?

The XM Edition of SELECT Server now provides an option to deploy SELECT Server at your location or have Bentley host your licenses for you. Your company's decision to host or deploy determines which SELECT Server XM component(s), if any, need to be installed. Additional information to help you decide which option is right for your company can be found here.

If you wish to Deploy SELECT Server XM locally at your site, you should install:
• SELECT Server XM and, if you need to run pre-XM Edition applications, the
• SELECT Server XM Gateway service *

If you wish to have Bentley host your licenses:
• SELECT Server XM Gateway service *

* The SELECT Server XM Gateway service provides licensing backward compatibility to 2004 Edition and earlier versions. Therefore, the Gateway service is only required IF these applications will be run at your site.

Fixes, Enhancements and New Features

What fixes have been introduced since the 08.09.02.36 release of SELECT Server XM?

08.09.03.48
• Fix - TR# 212205 - Gateway: Application list in pre-XM applications shows products when the admin as disabled checkouts
• Fix - TR# 212194 - Gateway: MicroStation J (7.2)'s license management tool fails to display a list of products if there are more than 16 products in the list.
• Fix - TR# 211486 - Gateway: Select Server does not allow checkout of license for PRE-XM version InRoads or GeoGraphics
• Fix - TR# 213434 - Gateway: PRE-XM MX Applications (MX Roads, MX Rails) etc. Cannot check in a license via the SELECT Server Gateway
• Fix - TR# 213435 - Gateway: PRE-XM MX Applications (MX Roads, MX Rails) Show duplicate Application Names in the checkout dialog
• Fix - TR# 213436 - Gateway: PRE-XM MX Applications (MX Roads, MX Rails) Checkout list shows applications that are not in the users license
• Fix - TR# 213459 - Unable to check out certain legacy applications through the SELECT Server Gateway

08.09.03.36
• ProjectWise Named User License usage is now properly reported when using ProjectWise Plot Organizer (formerly Digital InterPlot Client).

• Pre-XM Haestad applications are now supported via the SELECT Server XM Edition Gateway Service. A user-specific XML file must be obtained from Technical Support to enable this functionality.

• SELECT Server XM now supports multi-byte Chinese, Japanese and Korean character machine names to obtain licenses and to check out licenses.

• Over usage reports for Bentley Redline and Bentley View have been resolved.

• IP Addresses for machines reported via the Gateway are now properly resolved back to Hostnames.

• The 'License Update Available' message now only displays when an updated license is available.

What new features have been included since the 08.09.03.36 release of SELECT Server XM?

08.09.03.36
• Client Access Restrictions - The SELECT Server Administrator may now restrict who may access the license pool by way of machine name, domain or IP address. Wild cards are supported for entering ranges. Any computer not listed in the access list will be denied a license from the site and will enter the 30 day activation period.

• Checkout Restrictions - When checkouts are enabled, the administrator is now able to preset which applications and quantity are available for checkout by the end user. Once a check-out restriction is created, any product not on the list will not be available for checkout.

• Temporary Site Activation Keys - The key(s) are created by the SELECT Server administrator at the server lever to allow access to a subset of products from a site. The key(s) may include any combination of products from the site they are created from, and may have any end-date up until the site end-date. A typical use of a temporary activation key would be for a contractor who only requires access to some products contained in the site for a period of time less than the site end date. The usage will be recorded against the site the key is created against. Since the key(s) are created by the SELECT Server Administrator at the server, Bentley does not require knowledge of the key(s) nor will they be included separately in any usage report back to Bentley.

• Export to PDF and Excel - Any report generated by SELECT Server may now be exported to PDF and Microsoft Excel format.

• Application Usage by User report - This report displays application usage by User name.

• ProjectWise Named User License (PWNUL) Usage by month report - This report displays PWNUL peak usage per month.

• ProjectWise Named User License (PWNUL) Site Usage by month report - This report displays PWNUL peak usage per month broken out by site.

What enhancements have been included since the 08.09.03.36 release of SELECT Server XM?

08.09.03.48
• ProjectWise Named User License is now listed as ProjectWise Passport in the SELECT Server License

08.09.03.36
• All pre-XM products that rely on Plant Security for licensing are now properly licensed thru the SELECT Server XM Gateway.

• The installer has been updated to allow the site administrator to easily install the SELECT Server XM Gateway on its own or in combination with SELECT Server XM.

• The SELECT Server XM help file is now easier to navigate.
• The 'License Update Available' message now only displays when an updated license is available.

Overview

Configuration during SELECTserver install
When installing a V8 SELECTserver, one of the screens allows for the automatic configuration of the log file upload. The recommended way to configure a V8 SELECTserver for uploading the Usage and Client logs to Bentley is to make the "Monthly Automatic Upload" selection on this dialog box. This will make sure that the logs are sent on a regular basis with no extra work needed by the administrator. This same screen will appear twice since each of the two types of logs can be configured differently.

If your V8 SELECTserver is not configured to send the log files automatically, they will need to be sent manually. If the logs are not uploaded, a red-letter warning message will appear on the Administrative Interface page after 90 days. Note that this message is only a reminder and will have no effect on your V8 SELECTserver functionality.

Administrator Initiated Transfer
If the "Administrator initiated transfer" selection is made, the administrator will need to go to the "Scheduled Activities" section of the SELECTserver administrative interface page and click the "Activity Status" link to send the logs manually.

Find the link on the next page that starts with "ALL-UPLOAD-INTERNET...". Simply click the link.

This will take you to a page with another link that says "You may manually start the Activity".

When that link is clicked, the status will change to "running" and after a few seconds, a refresh of the screen should change it back to "idle".

Once that is done, check the lmdebug.log file in the SELECTserver directory to see if the upload was completed successfully.

The log should have entries similar to this: LM2620I Log File Upload activity has been started. [ActivityLogFileUpload::run(0)]
LM1830I Attempting to send file 'upload\USAGE-license-Upload.gz'.
LM1850I Sending file 'upload\USAGE-license-Upload.gz' has completed SUCCESSFULLY.

If the upload fails, it will tell you that also.

The log files can also be manually emailed to Bentley by sending them to sslogs@bentley.com. Note that this will not remove the red-letter warning message on the SELECTserver Administrative Interface.

Configuration after the V8 SELECTserver install
If the required links are not seen on the admin interface page, the SELECTserver\lmserver.inf file will need to be properly configured.

At the very end of the file, is this section:

# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[2] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=USAGE-UPLOAD-INTERNET-SCHEDULED UPLOAD=USAGE MONTH=* DAY=Random(1-28) HOUR=Random(0-23) MINUTE=*
HOST=http://registration.bentley.com/selectserv/reqhost.cfm"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[3] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=REG-UPLOAD-INTERNET-SCHEDULED UPLOAD=REGISTRATION MONTH=* DAY=Random(1-28) HOUR=Random(0-23) MINUTE=*
HOST=http://registration.bentley.com/selectserv/reqhost.cfm"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[4] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=ALL-UPLOAD-INTERNET-MANUAL UPLOAD=ALL HOST=http://registration.bentley.com/selectserv/reqhost.cfm"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[5] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=USAGE-UPLOAD-INTERNET-MANUAL UPLOAD=USAGE HOST=http://registration.bentley.com/selectserv/reqhost.cfm"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[6] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=REG-UPLOAD-INTERNET-MANUAL UPLOAD=REGISTRATION HOST=http://registration.bentley.com/selectserv/reqhost.cfm"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[7] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=ALL-UPLOAD-TO-FILE-MANUAL UPLOAD=ALL"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[8] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=USAGE-UPLOAD-TO-FILE-MANUAL UPLOAD=USAGE"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[9] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=REG-UPLOAD-TO-FILE-MANUAL UPLOAD=REGISTRATION"
# SCHEDULE_ACTIVITY[1] = "LogFileUpload: NAME=ALL-UPLOAD-INTERNET-SCHEDULED UPLOAD=ALL MONTH=* DAY=Random(1-28) HOUR=Random(0-23) MINUTE=*
HOST=http://registration.bentley.com/selectserv/reqhost.cfm"

There are nine different options. This is because there are two log files that can be sent separately or together and there are different options for sending, upload to file, upload to Internet manually and upload to Internet scheduled. Choose options 1, 4 or 7 for handling the log files together. The option chosen simply needs to be uncommented. Then save the file and restart the Bentley LMServer service.

Whenever the log files are sent, they are first encrypted and zipped up into ".gz" files. They are then copied to the upload directory before being uploaded to the Bentley server. Option 1 is for a regularly scheduled upload of both log files. By default it goes with a random date, but it can be configured to send on a specific date and time. Option 4 is for a manual Internet upload. This means that the admin will have to manually send the log files per the instructions above. Option 7 is for creating the zip files and sending them to the upload directory only. It will not actually send the files anywhere. This allows the administrator to review the log files before they are sent to Bentley Systems.

Proxy Server Configuration

If the network utilizes a proxy server, the Bentley LMServer Service will need to be changed from it's default "local system" account to one that has proxy settings enabled. The V8 SELECTserver uses the Internet Explorer client settings ("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings") for finding the requirements and locations of a proxy server. Make sure this user id has its Internet Settings properly configured to use the correct proxy server. To do this, login interactively as this user and use the Internet Explorer "Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Proxy server" to manually setup the proxy server address and port.

Note that, for ease of server maintenance, it may be desirable to use a user id context for which the password never expires.

Once the new account is properly configured, use the "Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Bentley LMServer > Properties > Log On > This Account" to configure the V8 SELECTserver to run as a particular user id.

  1. From the Services Window, double click on "Bentley LMServer".
  2. In the Properties box, click on the "Log On" tab.
  3. Under "Log on As:", change the setting from "Local System Account" to "This account".
  4. Enter the Log on ID and password of an account that has proxy settings enabled.
  5. Stop and restart the service.

Only SELECTservices Site Administrators or those users that the Site Administrators have given permission to will have access to the License Tool.

What can I do with the License Tool?

The License Tool can be used to change the computer name on a MicroStation/J license or it can be used to upgrade a MicroStation/J serial number to receive a MicroStation V8 license file.

Can I use the License Tool to upgrade more than one serial number at a time?

No. The License Tool is only used to upgrade one serial number at a time. You can go through the process for each license you need to upgrade or contact Bentley Sales Support.

What if I have Engineering Configurations on my MicroStation/J license?

If you have Engineering Configurations on your MicroStation/J license you will only be allowed to use the License Tool to change the computer name on your MicroStation/J license. You should not attempt to upgrade the serial number to MicroStation V8 until the Engineering Configurations for MicroStation V8 become available.

After I submit my upgrade, what happens next?

Once the requested changes have been processed, a confirmation E-mail including the re-license will be sent to the E-mail Delivery Address for that serial number.

What information is needed where it says "Computer Name"?

The Computer Name requirement for Version 7.0 or higher MicroStation products is not the computer's brand name. It is the Windows-assigned computer name/code identified in the Licensing Information dialog when you run the most current MicroStation products. You can also obtain the Computer Name from the Identification tab in the Network or System properties dialog box in Windows.

Overview

Machine and Server Name Changes specifically apply to Pre-XM, file based, Licensing.  With this file based licensing, both SELECTserver V8 and Nodelock V8 license files are encrypted to a specific workstation, defined by the machine name.  When Pre-XM Bentley Software is installed onto a new machine, a new license file must be generated for the new machine.

To make or request a Machine or Server Name Change, a user's web login must have the Site Administrator or License Manager Role.

Changing a Machine Name

  1. Navigate to the SELECTservices Website: http://selectservices.bentley.com.
  2. From the Support page click on License Tool under Account Management.
  1. A Multi-Site Administrator will have to select the site they wish to view, otherwise the Administrator is taken direcly to the License Tool page.
  2. Click on the View button under SELECTserver(s) or Nodelocks and Unassigned, depending on which you need to modify.

  3. Once you can view the licenses, click on the Manage hyperlink to the right of the license you wish to modify.

  4. Once on the Manage page, change the radio button to Move License File.  Then enter the new machine anme in the New Machine Name field.

  5. Finally, enter your email address into the Email confirmation to field (or the address where you'd like to send the file) and click Sent It.

In addition to Sunil's great response below, if you do not currently maintain a SELECT Maintenance Agreement with Bentley, You can dial in and have a Product Activation and Asset Administration Specialist move these licenses to another users machine and send you out a license file. The number to dial is 1-800-BENTLEY and wait for the Product Activation option to reach us.

If this is the case and you are interested in our SELECT Maintenance Agreement, additional information can be found at http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Subscriptions/Bentley%20SELECT/

Hope this Helps!

--Tyler

"Hello,

If you are a Select member you can go tohttp://appsnet.bentley.com/licensing/  and move your node locked licenses to a new workstation name.

Or you can create a service ticket on http://appsnet.bentley.com/srmanager/addcall.aspx. In the details field state that you want to move licenses to new workstation names. Mention the current hostnames along with the new hostnames. Attach the current licenses as zipped attachment to the ticket.

The licensing team will review the licenses and reply to you."

Overview

If an Administrator installs Bentley client products on a client machine and the client has different permissions than the administrator, the client software may not activate.  If this is the case, the clients user account needs to be granted permissions to write to the Registry of their machine.  The following is an overview of a Registry as well as the permissions needed for the end user for licensing.

Registry Basics

The registry has several sections, often referred to as "hives" (if you want to know why, see http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2003/08/08/54618.aspx). There are two primary sections that are of interest: HKEY_CURRENT_USER (abbreviated as HKCU) and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM). The former is used for user-specific settings, and the latter is used for machine settings.

For licensing, we first try to write to the machine section. The rationale has several parts. First off, if multiple users share the machine we want to minimize the amount of setup. Second, since licensing is used by a lot of different products, we want all products to use the same server name and activation key. Third, server products typically run as various system accounts, which are not users that log in. So when an actual administrator logs into the server, they change the licensing settings in HKLM and have it affect all server products.

However, unprivileged users can't write to HKLM. In this case we fall back to HKCU. We test this by actually trying to write to HKLM and either succeeding or failing. The decision about which section of the registry to use is done once, and early on.

  1. We first look to see if there is any data in HKCU. If so, then we use HKCU.
  2. If not, then we look to see if there is any data in HKLM. If so, we use HKLM.
  3. If there is no data in either, we then try to write to HKLM. If that succeeds, we use HKLM.
  4. Otherwise we use HKCU.

Product Registration data always goes in HKCU since that is per-user information.

Standard Locations

All licensing goes in the same registry keys; as mentioned previously, this can be in either HKLM or HKCU, or possibly other places in the more difficult cases mentioned below. However, doing a Send Logs Now from the license management tool will record the data in the licdebug.log.

Under the licensing version key in the registry there are two keys. The Applications key contains the application data, listed by product ID. The LastSent key contains the information where the logs are being kept in Windows Explorer.

In the licensing version key we store the basic licensing information provided by the user, such as the server name, activation key, whether to use SSL, and proxy information. We also store information provided from the server, such as the company name and site id.

Policies

Group Policies are enforced by the IT department. For licensing, they provide a simple way to keep everyone's server name and activation key in sync. For example, you're probably familiar with the group policies that set your screen saver to lock after 30 minutes.

For the purposes of licensing, the keys live in HKLM\Software\Policies and HKCU\Software\Policies, though usually in the latter. We look in HKCU\Software\Policies\Bentley\Licensing\1.1 (and the HKLM equivalent) for specific keys such as the server name, activation key, whether to use SSL, and proxy information. If they are set there, then those values are used regardless of what may appear in the registry.

Windows XP/2000/ME/98

  • If a product is installed by a Windows Administrator, what registry keys require read/write access for licensing?
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Bentley\Licensing
    • File System READ/WRITE permissions to \Application Data\Bentley\Licensing\
  • If the product is then used by a Windows User what registry keys require read/write access for licensing (if any)?
    • HKEY_LOCAL_USER\Software\Bentley\Licensing
    • File System READ/WRITE permissions to \Application Data\Bentley\Licensing\
  • If Group Policy is used to push license information to users PC, does each user need to activate each product the first time they use it? If so what registry keys (if any) do they need read/write access.
    • Group Policy doesn't actually activate the product.
    • Group Policy has nothing to do with activation. The sole purpose of group policies is to centralize and standardize the settings for a particular application. In Bentley Licensing this would be the Activation Key, Server Name and Proxy Settings
    • Each product is Activated every time the user runs the application. Permissions required to activate the product depend on if the user has Admin rights or not. See above for specific user write requirements
    • NOTE: Since activation status is stored on a per user basis for NON-Admin users, each unique user on a multi-user machine will have to activate the product. For this reason one user may see the product deactivated message while others may not.
  • How does the license client determine which setting to use
    • Since we support 3 locations to set the registry values there has to be an order of precedence. The registry locations listed below are listed in priority order. The entries are search in this order and the first location found wins.
      • § HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Policies\Bentley\Licensing
        • This is the registry that is set if an Admin applies our Group policy for defining the SELECT Server and Activation Key through Windows Group Policies. This allows for mass deployment and control from a central location. If this value is set then any value stored in another location is ignored.
        • § HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Bentley\Licensing
        • § HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Bentley\Licensing
    • When the licensing tool stores the values it first attempts to write them to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE keys. If access is denied then it will store them in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. When reading the values, this license client reads them in the opposite order, first reading HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
      • § So at a minimum ALL users will require rights to write to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, which is not an uncommon practice.
      • § The same applies for writing the log files it will first attempt to write to and then to

Vista/Windows 7/ Windows Server 2008

Recent Windows Operating Systems have this concept of Registry Virtualization, which is designed to protect the system. If the user is running with User Access Control (UAC) on and the application requests to run at elevated permissions level, it is allowed to write to HKLM. However, in this case it will write to a Virtual Registry (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa965884.aspx). Most Bentley products do not run at elevated permissions. However, some products run under AutoCAD, which does not run at the normal permission level. So in this circumstance, previous license clients would write to the Virtual HKLM. Then when the transmit application was spawned, it runs non-elevated, so it couldn't see the data written to the virtual HKLM. All license clients since 8.11 will forcibly write to HKCU if the other option is the virtualized HKLM. Note that this problem did not affect many users because if the License Tool or Activation Wizard was run at installation, it would write to HKCU (since it does not try to run elevated), which would in turn force all licensing to use the HKCU key.

It is also important to note that User Access Control (UAC) does not recognize administrator logins.  Even if you log onto the machine as a domain administrator, UAC will treat the login with the lower level permissions.  By default, UAC will always require you to tell it to run as administrator if you want something done at the administrator permission level.  Although the login may have administrator permissions, UAC always check to verify that you want to perform an administrative task.

64-bit OS

Windows 64-bit Operating Systems also have registry magic going on under the covers in the form of registry redirection (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896459). In this case, the goal is to allow both 32-bit and 64-bit applications to exist simultaneously and not interfere with each other. To achieve this, when a 32-bit application runs the keys under HKLM\Software are written into HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node. We have also seen the Wow6432Node under HKCU in Windows Server 2008. However, for Bentley licensing, we prefer to have only one location for all the licensing information. So, on all 64-bit OS's we use the flag so that it uses the 32-bit registry view, which means that the data will always be in the 32-bit section of the registry. We would rather that the data always exist in the 64-bit section, but we can't do that for two reasons. First if we try to move the data to the 64-bit section and the operation fails, we have no options. So we have to take the safer approach. And second, we can't create a link from the 32-bit section to the 64-bit section because the links are by name, and 32-bit apps look in the Wow6432Node if you tell them to look at the key name, making it recursive.

Work Around

  1. On an Operating System that utilizes UAC and will have an application that runs as a system service, to have licensing written to the registry hive where it can be read by the application that runs as a service (SELECTserver Gateway, ProjectWise Integration, etc), run the installation package as an administrator (right click on installation package and select “Run as administrator.”
  2. When installing software as an administrator and the users do not have permission to write to the HKLM registry hive, after installation, do not run the product activation wizard as an administrator.  Log off of the machine as the administrator, and log on under a user profile.  Launch the application and complete the Product Activation.

How To Set Permission For End Users

  • If a product is installed by an Windows Administrator, what registry keys require read/write access for licensing?
The sole purpose of group policies are to centralize and standardize the settings for a particular application.

      • § HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Policies\Bentley\Licensing

    SELECTserver in a IPV6 Environment

The SELECTserver application currently is not certified on the IPV6 platform. With that said the newer application (XM and V8i) should function normally inside the environment. Older applications that such as MSJ that are unable to communicate to the SELECTserver application will “NOT” be functional. They are legacy software applications developed before the implementation of the IPV6 platform and are seeking its environment information in a quad-formed format such as delivered by IPV4. That functionality changed with the “newer” releases of the application. There is not a “work-around” for this action in the legacy application. They are listed as “out of the development” and as with most software entities the focus is on the newer releases and moving forward technically.

Sounds like the original licensing details were set via Group Policy which over-rides any other licensing locations and results in the message you are seeing about 'The following options have been set by your SELECTserver administrator'. Further information on the subject can be found here: communities.bentley.com/.../default.aspx. It would be necessary to send new licensing details via Group Policy, or edit the registry manually, taking care as usual when changing anything in the registry.

When deployed SelectServer does not have connectivity (verified with SelectServer 09.00.00.113) and is configured using XML license file it will not be aware of the new Bentley Passport license and the products contained within it like AssetWise Client for example will not get licensed.

    Reason

Bentley Passport is a new license containing the old ProjectWise Passport and AssetWise Passport applications and the SelectServer Installation 09.00.00.113 (the latest as of now) is not aware of the change.

    Steps to Resolve

Transmit SelectServer application usage logs manually in SelectServer Administration Site->Administration->Manual Log Transmittal and import response file - at this moment you will start seeing the Bentley Passport in View License File in the Administration Site but on the user side the Bentley Passport may still not be shown in the License Management Tool (because of Internet Information Services caching), in this case it is needed to stop/start the SelectServer Application Pool in the Internet Information Services on SelectServer machine.

After the above is done you can locate the AssetWise Passport (the old license name) in the Activation Status of LMT on the user machine, highlight it and click Activate - the name will change to AssetWise Client and it will get Activated.

    Overview

If the error 1067: The service terminated unexpectedly occurs when Starting the Bentley SELECTServer Gateway, the following suggestions may resolve the error message.

    1. Make sure the SELECTServer Administration Site can be accessd  for SELECT Server (For Bentley Deployed, choose start/programs/Bentley/SELECTserver/administration site or for Bentley Hosted go to http://selectserver.bentley.com/bss/admin ). If you cannot view this page, then the Gateway Service will not start.

    2. Make sure the Bentley LM Server service is not running in your windows services page.  If this service is running, please set this to stopped with manual start up and try restarting the Gateway Service.

    3. If you are running the gateway on the same machine as SELECT Server, please open the License Management Tool (start/programs/Bentley/SELECTServer/License Management Tool) and change the machine name to localhost (all one word), also make sure you the activation key has all capital letters and no spaces.  In addition if your network requires the use of a Proxy Server and you are using the Bentley Hosted SELECTserver, make sure all required proxy information is entered within the Proxy Configuration Tab.

    4.  If you are running Select Server XM Deployed, make sure your Directory Securities under Internet Information Services Manger>Web Sites>Default Website>BSS are set to anonymous access for the BSS virtual directory.
If using Integrated Windows Authentication please do the following:
You will want to open your computer management, and expand local users and groups, and then open your groups folder.  In here you will want to open your Users folder and add the following roles:
     ASPNET
     NT Authority\Authenticated Users (S-1-5-11)
     NT Authority\INTERACTIVE (S-1-5-4)
Once you do this navigate to the properties of your Select Server folder (C:/program files/bentley/selectserver) and add "Modify" permissions to your users group.  After you to this perform an IIS reset: (Start>Run>type IISRESET>hit ok).  Once this is done, you can go back and try to start your SELECTserver Gateway service.  If the error persists the steps in the following technote may remedy the problem: http://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/authenticating-160-the-bentley-selectserver-gateway-when-integrated-windows-authentication-is-in-use.aspx

If you are still unable to start the Bentley SELECTserver Gateway service, please create a Service Ticket at the following site http://appsnet.bentley.com/srmanager/addcall.aspx and attach the logs found at C:\Program files\Bentley\SELECT Server\Logs. A Technical Support Analyst will review the logs and contact you to troubleshoot further
