Hi Michael,

You are absolutely correct. I do not get any such trial window when using group policy. I tested this with a new machine and a clean install to be sure.

Thanks

Currently SELECTserver is not supported on Windows server 2012 and won’t work correctly. We will eventually have a solution for this OS but we currently we have no date.

Forum Post: Usage License with Sleeping computer

Hi,

Here's a funny situation.  I had some overages on my trusted licensing for a really stupid (on my part) reason.  I was working on my laptop at the airport on Microstation (on a vba routine, if you must know) and I closed the lid of my laptop to put it into hybernate/sleep.  I did not think anything of it, but while it was asleep and not doing anything for close to a week, it was logging 23hrs 59min each day to license server.

I guess I'm not looking for any real response--it's just something good for end-users to know and Bentley to think about.

Hello Rasher,

Can you try going to Tools>Send logs now and run that, in the License Management Tool. Once complete try highlighting Microstation Powerdraft again and click 'Activate'.

If that doesn't resolve the issue can you find the client licensing folder for that machine, zip it up and email it to me at jim.irvine@bentley.com and I'll analyse the contents. It will be in one of the following locations:

XP

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\licensing
C:\Documents and Settings\<User profile>\Application Data\Bentley\Licensing
C:\Documents and Settings\<User profile>\Local Settings\Application Data\Bentley\Licensing

Windows 7

C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Licensing
C:\Users\<User profile>\AppData\Local\Bentley\Licensing

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Phil & Steve,

Thank you so much for trusted licensing & the 30 day window!  I have talked to firms that were stuck because either 1) too many seats were being used at that moment, or 2) the west coast office was dead because the license server was on the east coast and the internet was down!

Again, thanks so much.

Are there any differences between the reports generated by a deployed SELECTserver and those transmitted to Bentley?

The reports are essentially the same, although no proprietary account information is transmitted from the account to Bentley's Web Services. Instead, machine or user names generally viewable from an account's administrative pages are replaced by hashed values using a multi-pass, one-way encryption (SHA1) technique. This one-way hash provides a means for Bentley to uniquely identify a machine or a user. An encrypted machine or user name cannot be reverse engineered to produce its original name.

Does SELECTserver perform any encryption on network transmissions or data?

SELECTserver obscures machine and user names in the processing of transmitted reports to Bentley, but does no other encryption on any other data. SELECTserver relies on Microsoft IIS and SSL to encrypt network transmissions. All network communications are standard network protocols and, as such, can be routed through any standard network security mechanism.

What information is transmitted in a usage report sent to Bentley?

There is no proprietary or personal information in usage reports that are transmitted to Bentley. SELECTserver supports the Secure Socket Layer (SSL), so all transmissions are secure.

What network protocols will be used, and what ports will need to be open?

SELECTserver uses HTTP and HTTPS. The SELECTserver Gateway still uses a proprietary protocol on port 3998 to communicate with pre-XM applications. In all cases Bentley applications will initiate the communications with the SELECTserver. Data flows from the client machine to SELECTserver; from SELECTserver it is summarized and usage logs are transmitted via secure web services to Bentley.

Who has access to the administrative pages for my company's Sites on SELECTserver OnLine?

Only those SELECT Online subscribers who have "License Administration Rights", as defined by Bentley's CRM system, have access to the administration pages of their site(s) on SELECTserver OnLine.

Does Bentley remotely access SELECTservers at a user's site?

No. All communication between a deployed SELECTserver and Bentley's Web Services are controlled by the account.

Can I obtain a fail-over license to prevent against catastrophe?

There will be no need to replace redundant licenses that have been issued for the purposes of fail-over or redundancy. SELECTserver is built on standard Microsoft technologies that are well-suited for clustering or other techniques used to safeguard application servers. In addition, SELECTserver is no longer a real-time license server, so if a connection is lost, licensed applications are still able to run in full-functioning mode.

I can't connect my SELECTserver to the Internet! How do I manually transmit my usage logs to and update my license from Bentley?

SELECTserver includes alternate, manual procedures for transmitting usage reports to Bentley and downloading license updates. You must set SELECTserver to transmit application usage logs manually on the Server Settings administrative page. Logs need to be prepared and sent to Bentley monthly in order to keep SELECTserver activated. A number of alternatives exist for transmitting the reports, including:

* Upload the file(s) via the web
* Email the file(s)
* Mail the files on CD to Bentley

An Acknowledgment File will need to be processed each time a report is transmitted in order to reset SELECTserver.

Upgrade Steps:

1.     Review the technical requirements for SELECTserver (09.XX.XX.XX).

Technical Requirements:
http://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/Licensing__Wiki/selectserver-technical-requirements.aspx

Software Prerequisites - SELECTserver Gateway requires:

  • Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0
  • MSXML 6.0

Note:
The current SELECTserver Gateway installer does "NOT" put these prerequisites in place. Please ensure their presence before installation.

2.     Download the version to match your operating system: 32-bit or 64-bit and save it to a temporary directory. You will need your previously supplied username and password to access the page. If you do not have access please contact your site administrator who will be able to access the download site.            http://selectservices.bentley.com/en-US/

3.     Uninstall the old version first (DO NOT INSTALL THE NEW VERSION ON TOP OF THE OLD ONE).

4.     Run the downloaded executable and allow it to unpack. Please note where the extracted files unpack. The default directory is C:\Program Files\BentleyDownloads

Note:
Do not remove the registry keys if asked. The 08.09.03.48 and prior version do ask this question. Leaving the keys allows the newer version to “auto configure” the application based on the retained registry information.

5.    Run the executable for the downloaded version and allow it to “unpack” into a directory. Through windows explorer go to the directory where the application unpacked and run the SETUP.exe and follow the prompts for installation.

Backing up a database

It is good practice to have a backup of critical data such as that contained within your SELECTserver database. This article details how to create such a backup.
In order to backup of a MSSQL or MSDE database you will need to make use of the osql tool. Open a command prompt and type the following, replacing what is in red with the applicable information:

osql -S MyServerName -U user -P password -Q "BACKUP DATABASE [Database Name] TO DISK = N'c:\SSXM_DB_BACKUP.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'[Full Backup]', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10"

Example:

osql -S DOEHM27519EXT -U sa -P sa -Q "BACKUP DATABASE [SELECTServer] TO DISK = N'c:\SSXM_DB_BACKUP.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'[Full Backup]', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10"

This example will generate a database backup named SSXM_DB_BACKUP.bak, located in the c:\ directory.

Wiki Page: SELECTserver Gateway Service Fails To Connect through Proxy Server [TN]

Overview

PROBLEM
When a SELECTserver Gateway 8.11.7.35 and prior is configured in the License Management Tool to use a proxy server, and the authentication is set to use domain\user, the Bentley SELECTserver Gateway service will fail to negotiate NTLM authentication and the service fails to start.

WORKAROUND

1) Set the username to user (dropping the domain) the service is able to negotiate NTLM authentication. Basic authentication (clear text) seems to work with the domain\user username. License Management Tool does not have the problem negotiate NTLM authentication.

2) For ISA Server, allow all HTTP traffic to http://*.bentley.com:80 for anonymous users.

SOLUTION

Upgrade to SELECTserver 08.11.07.88.

What is a hosted license and what are the advantages?

Hosted Licensing Services allows your licenses to be stored on a server at Bentley. It offers the same pooled licenses and usage reporting as an "in-house" SELECTserver but does not require the same hardware, software or personnel investment. The requirements for desktop connectivity of V8 XM Edition and V8i applications are no different for hosted licensing than for SELECTserver.

What are the main differences between SELECTserver V8 2004 and SELECTserver?

  • V8 XM Edition and V8i products no longer require a license file. All licensing information is entered and validated with activation keys.
  • Licensed applications no longer require a constant connection to the SELECTserver. They do, however, need to connect at least once every 30 days (or more frequently in the case of some products). This is to ensure that users of Bentley applications are not denied use of their mission-critical application(s).
  • SELECTserver communicates directly with Bentley servers to perform such tasks as downloading license entitlements and uploading usage logs. Optimally communication is done every day but can be delayed up to a maximum of 30 days.
  • V8 XM Edition and V8i products that do not communicate with a SELECTserver or SELECTserver OnLine and a SELECTserver  that does not communicate with Bentley within 30 days default to the deactivated state. All products will then be restricted to a 15 minute trial period.
  • SELECTserver expands the concept of a "site". In essence, one SELECTserver machine can host multiple sites. A site can be thought of as a license pool, so one SELECTserver machine can host multiple pools, each dedicated to a physical location as defined in the SELECT agreement. It is very likely that large, multi-site user organizations can consolidate SELECTservers in the future, and not need to have as many physical servers as previously required.
  • SELECTserver has a "never deny" policy. As long as there is at least one (1) license for an application in the pool for the site, every request for that application will be granted.
  • SELECTserver still supports the concept of license checkout, and actually improves upon the concept by allowing the license to be checked out for (up to) the length of the SELECT contract.

Why is my company required to report application usages through log transmissions to Bentley?

The transmission of usage logs to Bentley is a requirement with the advent of the SELECTserver licensing configuration. Previous versions of SELECTserver have compiled and reported application usage but none have allowed for disconnected working as a default. SELECTserver therefore introduces a brand new infrastructure and process for report transmission, automating the process and, thereby, removing any demands on the administrator's time. This reporting function is very important to Bentley, as this detailed knowledge helps inform Bentley regarding:

  • What products are in use.
  • Where to direct future development efforts to the benefit of the user base.
  • How to resource for future support services.

Furthermore, long-range development priorities can be also be better validated when Bentley understands how many users will benefit from a compelling new product or feature.

What information is transmitted in a usage report sent to Bentley?

There is no proprietary or personal information in usage reports that are transmitted to Bentley. SELECTserver supports the Secure Socket Layer (SSL), so all transmissions are secure.

Will I be able to run my pre-XM products with SELECTserver?

Any pre-XM product that currently receives its licenses from a SELECTserver will be able to receive licenses from SELECTserver through SELECTserver Gateway.

What is the SELECTserver Gateway Service?

SELECTserver Gateway Service manages pre-XM applications, such as MicroStation V8 2004 Edition or MicroStation/J. It emulates the pre-XM SELECTserver and allows pre-XM products to communicate with the new SELECTserver . The difference though is that the SELECTserver Gateway machine does NOT have its own license file, but must communicate with SELECTserver to proxy licenses on behalf of pre-XM applications. The Gateway Service must communicate (at least once) with a SELECTserver to pull down, or cache, license information before it will serve licenses to clients. Like other XM Edition and V8i applications, the Gateway Service must also communicate with the SELECTserver at least once every 30 days. This is necessary in order for the SELECT Server to collect usage logs from pre-XM applications, and for the Gateway Service to download any new licenses from the SELECTserver . Should the Gateway Service fail to connect to SELECT Server for 30 consecutive days, it will cease to serve licenses.

In addition, pre-XM Edition clients still require a continuous (heartbeat) connection to the Gateway Service in order to operate normally. Lastly, the Gateway Service monitors usage information amongst pre-XM clients and then periodically uploads the log data to the SELECTserver, just as an XM Edition or V8i application would.

Do I need to install SELECTserver and the Gateway Service on the same machine?
SELECTserver and the Gateway Service may be installed on the same machine, or on separate machines.

When accessing the SELECTserver Administration page, receiving a message that the Gateway Service is not running. It is running, but on another machine.

A FULL or TYPICAL installation of SELECTserver was done. Check the machine that SELECTserver is running on and see if there are two Bentley services running (Bentley SELECTserver and Bentley SELECTserver Gateway). If so, you will need to uninstall the SELECTserver Gateway.

1. Open a command prompt
2. Change directories to the directory you installed SSXM to (Typically c:\program file\bentley\selectserver)
3. Type: SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\InstallUtil.exe /u Bentley.SelectServer.Gateway.exe /Assembly bin\Bentley.SelectServer.Common.dll
4. Press Enter.

Will my SELECTserver operate in a proxy server environment?

Yes, SELECTserver will work in a proxy server environment in several ways. First, V8 XM and V8i applications will be able to communicate to SELECTserver via a proxy server. SELECTserver will also be able to communicate with Bentley.com Web services via a proxy server. Finally, SELECTserver Gateway will be able to communicate with SELECTserver via proxy servers.

In what order should the software prerequisites be installed?

1. MSXML 6.0
2. Internet Information Servers (with ASP.NET support)
3. .NET Framework 1.1

How do I install MSXML 6.0?

Download the MSXML 6.0 from Microsoft's Website.

There are four options for downloading MSXML 6.0:

1. Use msxml.msi to install MSXML 6.0 and the SDK on your computer. You may also save msxml.msi to your local disk to install later. The MSXML 6.0 SDK is not installed by default. You must select the custom install option to install the SDK.
2. Use msxmlsdk.exe to download the redistributable merge module xmlsdk4.msm to distribute with your setup application.
3. Include msxml4sxs32.msm and msxm4sys32.msm in your msi installer. To get these files run msxml6msms.exe. For more information about packaging these msm files, see the release notes.
4. Use msxmlcab.exe to download the CAB file to redistribute MSXML over the Internet.

Click the file you want to download from the list on the Webpage.

Do one of the following:

* To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
* To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.

How do I install IIS?

NOTE: When installing IIS on Windows 2003 Server, you are given the option to install ASP.NET. However, this option is not available when installing IIS on Windows XP, or Windows 2000 Server. In order to install ASP.NET on Windows XP, or Windows 2000 Server, you should install IIS before installing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. When .NET Framework is installed, it will then detect that IIS has been installed and add support for ASP.NET. If you install IIS after .NET Framework, you will not have support for ASP.NET, and the SELECT Server XM Administration site will not function.Windows 2000 Server Installation

1. Internet Information Server is distributed as an optional component of the operating system. Installation options can be found from:
2. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel

7. Click the Next button.
8. The wizard will prompt for the Windows XP Professional CD to be placed in the CD-ROM Drive, assuming it is not already in the drive.
9. It should then proceed to install. Click Finish to complete the installation of IIS.

How do I install .NET Framework?

1. Download the .NET Framework 2.0 from Microsoft's Website.

Once the download is complete, run dotnetfx.exe. Complete the wizard as instructed and then restart your computer.

When installing SQL receiving message about needing a strong SA Password.

The prerequisites are installed. Now what?

1. Contact the Sales Support Group for your SELECTserver Site Activation Key and the address of the Bentley Server you will be validating your information against.
2. Download SELECTserver .
3. Double click on the downloaded .EXE file to extract the necessary installation files.
4. See SELECTserver.chm, the SELECTserver help file included in the extracted files, for step-by-step installation instructions.
5. Install SELECTserver .
6. Activate your SELECTserver .
7. Install the SELECTserver Gateway (If necessary).
8. Activate the SELECTserver Gateway.
9. Install Microstation V8 XM or V8i.
10. Activate Microstation V8 XM or V8i.
11. Modify the local license file for all pre-XM products to point to the machine running the SELECTserver Gateway (If necessary).

During SELECTserver install receiving the message: "Cannot find internet information server". If you only want to install the Gateway click "next".

There is no Internet Information Server (IIS) loaded on the server. It is a prerequisite for SELECTserver installation. You must uninstall SELECTserver and install IIS and any other prerequisites not installed.

What is the name of Bentley's server for hosted licenses?

SELECTserver.bentley.com

With a new hosted license the error message "Server does not support activation key" is returned when trying to activate a product.

* Be aware that the activation key takes at least an hour to be updated in the Bentley Hosted XM server for it to be recognized for MicroStation.
* Check the email that came from the Bentley Administration Center. It should only list a Bentley Server Name and Activation Key. If it lists a SELECTserver Serial Number, SELECTserver Activation Key and Site/Gateway Activation Key you have the information for running a Select Server XM on your site. Contact the Bentley Administration Center to resend the information for a HOSTED license.

Verifying Server and Activation key failed. Error 401 received when accessing SELECT Server administration page.

HTTP 401 Error usually means "Access Denied". Although Anonymous access was defined, the Windows 2000 Server is most likely a domain controller also. The IUSER_Server did not have sufficient access or did not exist. Use a domain administrator account instead.

An error occurred retrieving the license from Bentley.com: HTTP status 404. Not Found.

This indicates that the SELECTserver could not communicate with the licensing server at bentley.com.

* Your SELECTserver does not have access to the internet or requires a proxy server to access the internet. If your server needs to use a proxy server to connect to the internet use the "Server Settings" link in the SELECTserver administration site to configure your proxy settings.

 How to backup a database

It is good practice to have a backup of critical data such as that contained within your SELECT Server database. This article details how to create such a backup.

In order to backup of a MSSQL or MSDE database you will need to make use of the osql tool. Open a command prompt and type the following, replacing what is in red with the applicable information:

osql -S MyServerName -U user -P password -Q "BACKUP DATABASE [Database Name] TO DISK = N'Path and File Name' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'[Full Backup]', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10"

Example:

osql -S DOEHM27519EXT -U sa -P sa -Q "BACKUP DATABASE [SELECTServer] TO DISK = N'c:\SSXM_DB_BACKUP.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'[Full Backup]', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10"

This example will generate a database backup named SSXM_DB_BACKUP.bak, located in the c:\ directory.

Warning: Making these changes can cause serious, system-wide problems within your environment. Do not make these changes unless you are confident with these steps and understand the impact to your system and other applications running on it.

Overview

SQL Server service shuts down due to inactivity and the database "closes down" when no connections are active. There may also be a decrease in query performance, database maintenance operations, or regular transaction operations. In reviewing the SQL Server Log files you may notice the following errors:

SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of cachestore flush for the 'Object Plans' cachestore (part of plan cache) due to some database maintenance or reconfigure operations.
SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of cachestore flush for the 'SQL Plans' cachestore (part of plan cache) due to some database maintenance or reconfigure operations.
SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of cachestore flush for the 'Bound Trees' cachestore (part of plan cache) due to some database maintenance or reconfigure operations.

Note: This behavior does not occur in Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Solution

The cache flush errors are related to the database being set to “Auto Close”, this should be disabled.

Option 1 -Using the MicroSoft SQL Server Management Studio, open the database properties click options and set the Auto Close to “False”.

Option 2 –From the command prompt, run the ALTER DATABASE command using “SQLCMD”.

ALTER DATABASE (DATABASENAME) SET AUTO_CLOSE OFF

Using the Windows “Trusted” Connection
SQL Server 2005
SQLCMD -S SERVER\SQL Instance -E

(Using a SQL administrator account)
SQLCMD -S SERVER\SQL Instance -U account name -P password

Warning: Making these changes can cause serious, system-wide problems within your environment. Do not make these changes unless you are confident with these steps and understand the impact to your system and other applications running on it.

Overview

An insert query to a table that has foreign key references cannot generate a plan. Most likely this is caused when an earlier version of SS XM that uses MSDE (SQL 2000) was upgraded to SS 8.11.xx.xx, which changed the database to use SQL Server Express 2005.

Server: Msg 8624, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan. For more information, contact Customer Support Services.

Solution

Set the database compatibility to match the version of SQL Server.

ALTER DATABASE database_name SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = {80 | 90 | 100}

Note: The ALTER command is only available in SQL Server 2008. When using prior versions of SQL Server, you will need to use the sp_dbcmptlevel stored procedure to change the compatibility mode.

Exec sp_dbcmptlevel ‘database_name, compatibility_level

COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL {80 | 90 | 100}

The value must be one of the following:

 80 = SQL Server 2000

90 = SQL Server 2005

100 = SQL Server 2008

Note: If using MicroSoft SQL Server Management Studio you can change the compatibility mode by going to the properties of the database, select options and choose the appropriate mode that matches the SQL Server version as listed above.

What is the purpose of user registration in the XM Edition?

Our original implementation of MicroStation on the Web endeavored to introduce and combine the registration of a user with the use of the product. User Registration and Product Activation are two separate, but complementary, implementations in the XM Edition. The purpose of registration, entered via the Support Path Help menu entry, is to make and maintain contact with individual users of Bentley applications. This helps Bentley to better understand who our users are and what applications they use, therefore enabling us to provide better service to them.

What's the difference between Product Activation and User Registration?

Product Activation describes the process of readying a product for commercial, academic, or home use, based on the terms of the end user license agreement. User Registration, while often performed from within a Bentley product, registers the user of a Bentley product so that Bentley can enable online access to and/or subscribe the user to Bentley publications. SELECTserver can assist in either process, often easing implementation, especially in larger installations.

How is Support Path registration different from MicroStation on the Web registration?

First, SELECTserver participates by providing a bulk registration interface as well as a verification of registered users, a "closing of the loop". It is designed to be completely transparent to the user, should the system administrator choose to make it so. Secondly, the registration process will not initialize until an application has been suitably activated. In this way user registration is not applicable for applications which are only being evaluated for short durations. Thirdly, registration is not required for users who are already registered via MicroStation on the Web. Finally, after a modest number of attempts, the user can dismiss the registration utility and it will not appear again.

Is there a bulk registration utility for registering users?

Yes, there is a process for bulk registering users. In fact, SELECTserver assists in the verification of Support Path registration as well as previous registration implementations (MicroStation on the Web).

Overview

Upon opening the SELECTserver Administration page, a message displays informing that the SELECTserver usage logs have not been transmitted. As a result the SELECTserver is left in a disabled state, and the only options along the left hand side links are "Request/Update License File" and "Transmit Usage Logs".

In order to resolve the error message, choose "Transmit Usage Logs" and follow the 4 steps.

When choosing step 1 you may receive the following error message:

0 LOGS FOUND TO PROCESS

If this message appears, it is most likely a result of the SELECTserver Serial Number and Server Activation Key being entered incorrectly or if the SELECTserver service has not been started. The other possibility could have to do with Proxy Server Settings not being correct (Proxy Servers are not required by Bentley, however if the network where SELECTserver is installed requires Proxy Settings, then this information will need to be entered).

The following are solutions to resolve the 0 logs to be processed error:

SOLUTION 1: Manually run the SELECTserver tasks

Please ensure that the SELECTServer service is running.

Open the Administrative Site page.

NOTE: Check the SELECTserver version (bottom left-hand corner of the page). If your version is prior to the 08.11.07.35  version, this process will not be effective. Please go to "SOLUTION 2".

Look down the left hand side of the page under the ADMINISTRATION section there is a link "Manage Services". Select the link

Please note that your SELECTserver service and Bentley SELECTserver Gateway services are running (green) and that there are a few SELECTserver Tasks. We are concerned with the Usage Log Processing, Usage Log Posting, and Data Update Service tasks.

Using the associated "RUN NOW" soft button to the right of each service task run the Usage Log Processing task.

NOTE: The STATE of the task will change from "IDLE" to "RUNNING". Allow the task to complete its processing. The page display is dynamic so you will be able to see the status change back to IDLE when it is done.

You will need to complete this action for all three task in this order.

Usage Log Processing
Usage Log Posting
Data Update Service

Upon completion the "Last Run Results" should read "Success" and all of the links down the left-hand side of the Administration Site page should be active.

NOTE: If you were configured for Manual Usage Transmission all of your links will not be active but you will now have "LOGS" to process and can use your normal procedure to complete that task.At the completion of that process all of your links will be active.

SOLUTION 2: Reseting the Database Time Format

SELECTserver can be corrected through either a Command Prompt or by using the SQL Express Studio Management Console.
If using SQL Express Studio Management the following will fix the problem.

1. Open the Console and Locate the Database which SELECTserver is using.
2. One the Database if located, right click it and choose "NEW QUERY"
3. Once here you can disable the manual logs transmittal by typing the following:

update ss_Configuration set KeyValue='False' where KeyName='SS_EnableManualLogTransmitting'
Then highlight the line and choose "F5" make sure this is FALSE

(NOTE: If not urgent this will fix the message within SELECTserver the next time it tries posting the usage logs (usually 12:00 AM)

If this is urgent, this step can be expedited by adjusting the Log Processing Time by entering the next line.

INSERT INTO ss_Configuration (KeyName, KeyValue) VALUES ('SS_RunTime_UsageLogProcessingService', '11:00:00')

4. Change the time to 1 minute past the current time (ie if it is 2:00 set the time to ‘02:01:00')

5. Once this adjustment has been made enter the next line for the posting:

INSERT INTO ss_Configuration (KeyName, KeyValue) VALUES ('SS_RunTime_UsageLogPostingService', '11:00:00')

6. Change the time to 5 minute past the current time (i.e. if it is 2:00 set the time to ‘02:05:00')

7. Once this is done you must restart the Bentley SELECTserver Service within your Windows Services page (Start > Control   Panel > Administrative Tools > Services)

8. After the service has been restarted, you must reset IIS. You can do this by choosing (Start > Run > enter IISRESET > then hit OK.

If  using a CMD prompt, enter the following CMD:

osql -S MyServerName\InstanceName -U user -P password -Q "BACKUP DATABASE [Database Name] TO DISK = N'c:\SSXM_DB_BACKUP.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'[Full Backup]', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10"

The InstanceName can be found in the server definition section of the SELECTserver Database Setup tool.

Once at this location within the CMD Prompt, Enter the same commands that would be entered using SQL Express Studio Management Console.

(NOTE: Using a CMD Prompt will require the user name and password for the Database.  If this information is unknown, the only option for correcting the Usage Log Error is Solution 1)

To prevent it from happening again:

1. Open the system services (start>run>services.msc)

2. Locate the Bentley SELECTserver service, right click on it, and select properties.

3. Select the recovery tab from the tabs across the top.

4. Set the value for the first failure, second failure and subsequent failures to "restart the service."

5. Set the value for "Restart service after" to how ever long you think the machine takes to reboot. Generally 4-5 minutes is a good number.

Overview

If the error 1067: The service terminated unexpectedly occurs when Starting the Bentley SELECTServer Gateway, the following suggestions may resolve the error message.

1. Make sure the SELECTServer Administration Site can be accessd  for SELECT Server (For Bentley Deployed, choose start/programs/Bentley/SELECTserver/administration site or for Bentley Hosted go to http://selectserver.bentley.com/bss/admin ). If you cannot view this page, then the Gateway Service will not start.

2. Make sure the Bentley LM Server service is not running in your windows services page.  If this service is running, please set this to stopped with manual start up and try restarting the Gateway Service.

3. If you are running the gateway on the same machine as SELECT Server, please open the License Management Tool (start/programs/Bentley/SELECTServer/License Management Tool) and change the machine name to localhost (all one word), also make sure you the activation key has all capital letters and no spaces.  In addition if your network requires the use of a Proxy Server and you are using the Bentley Hosted SELECTserver, make sure all required proxy information is entered within the Proxy Configuration Tab.

4.  If you are running Select Server XM Deployed, make sure your Directory Securities under Internet Information Services Manger>Web Sites>Default Website>BSS are set to anonymous access for the BSS virtual directory.
If using Integrated Windows Authentication please do the following:
You will want to open your computer management, and expand local users and groups, and then open your groups folder.  In here you will want to open your Users folder and add the following roles:
 ASPNET
 NT Authority\Authenticated Users (S-1-5-11)
 NT Authority\INTERACTIVE (S-1-5-4)
Once you do this navigate to the properties of your Select Server folder (C:/program files/bentley/selectserver) and add "Modify" permissions to your users group.  After you to this perform an IIS reset: (Start>Run>type IISRESET>hit ok).  Once this is done, you can go back and try to start your SELECTserver Gateway service.  If the error persists the steps in the following technote may remedy the problem: http://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/authenticating-160-the-bentley-selectserver-gateway-when-integrated-windows-authentication-is-in-use.aspx

If you are still unable to start the Bentley SELECTserver Gateway service, please create a Service Ticket at the following site http://appsnet.bentley.com/srmanager/addcall.aspx and attach the logs found at C:\Program files\Bentley\SELECT Server\Logs. A Technical Support Analyst will review the logs and contact you to troubleshoot further

Overview

Error:  The License As Expired.

This message appears when opening SELECTserver Administration Site (http://servername/bss/admin) and the license has expired.

The two ways to update an expired license are electronically or manually.

If you choose to retrieve the license electronically you can do so by choosing the Request/Update License link on the left hand side of the SELECTserver Administration Site under the  License Management section.  Once you are inside the link, verify that the Serial Number and Activation Key (which is the Server Activation Key in this case) is correct, check the Force Full Retrieval box, and press OK.

The page will process and a new line should appear with a (+) at the beginning.  This is the new license, and will need to be accepted for it is applied.  To accept this license scroll to the right and in the upper right hand side of the screen there is an Accept button.  Selecting the Accept button will update your License and the message will go away.

If "An error has occurred message appears" at any point in the process, do the following:

(***Please note: If this is SELECTserver 08.11.00.00 or newer please copy the YACLAP.dll from C:\Program Files\Bentley\SELECTserver\Bin to C:\Program Files\Bentley\SELECTserver then run the following from a command line.***)

On the machine where SELECTserver is installed:

  1. Close the Administration Site page.
  2. Go to the system services and stop the Bentley SELECTserver service (start>run>services.msc).
  3. Click Start -> Run
  4. Type cmd in the Open text box and click OK
  5. Type CD C:\Program Files\Bentley\SELECTserver (or what ever directory you have installed SELECTserver to) and press ENTER*
  6. Type: changeloglevels /level:TRACE and press ENTER
  7. Type IISRESET and press ENTER
  8. Open the SELECTserver administration Site

If it tells you that the SELECTserver service is not running and asks if you want to start it, than it is back in fully functional mode.

Turn the logging back to normal, at the command prompt in the SELECTserver directory enter: changeloglevels /level:INFO and press ENTER

If that does not resolve the issue try the following:

  1. On the SELECTserver admin page, from the menu on the left hand side down towards the bottom of the list, select request/update license, check the force full retrieval box and then the ok button.
  2. Once it returns the change, select the accept button in the top right hand corner. It will still show the same error message but that's ok.
  3. Restart the SQL Server service. Depending on your configuration the service may either be named MSSQL$SELECTserver or SQL Server (SELECTserver).
  4. Restart the Bentley SELECTserver service
  5. Restart IIS services by running iisreset in the run command (start>run>iisreset)
  6. Bring up the SELECTserver admin page

To manually import the license, you need to contact Bentley SELECTsupport for a new XML license file.  Once this license file is received choose the Import Server License link found on the left hand side of the Administration Site under License Management. Once you are inside the link, verify that the Serial Number and Activation Key (which is the Server Activation Key in this case) is correct, browse to where you have saved the XML License File, and press OK.

The page will process and a new line should appear with a (+) at the beginning. This is the new license, and will need to be accepted for it is applied. To accept this license scroll to the right and in the upper right hand side of the screen there is an Accept button. Selecting the Accept button will update your License and the message will go away.
