Overview
Product Activation is the act of authenticating a product for entitled use. If you need assistance activating, please see Product Activation. If you have any trouble activating, please proceed.
If at any point during the below troubleshooting steps you find you need further assistance, please feel free to Post to our Forums and a Bentley Colleague or member will respond ASAP.
If you are running a pre-XM application with server-based licensing, see Troubleshooting Pre-XM Client Error Messages with Server Based Licensing.
Troubleshooting
1. Check if the license file.
- Be sure the “.LIC” file was saved with the proper extension. Sometimes notepad will append the extension with a “.TXT” at the end of the license file name, resulting in “[filename].LIC.TXT”.
- File extensions may be hidden. Unhide your file extensions and rename the file, removing the “.txt” from the file name. For a list of file names and locations, see License File Names V8.
2. A license for this product could not be found.
- When an application starts, it looks in the default licensing directory.
- This message indicates that the file itself was not found.
- This means that either the file is named incorrectly, or that the file is in the wrong directory.
- Check to make sure the file is named properly and in the right place.
2. No license usages were found to match your request.
- This message means the license file was found, but did not contain a license usage for the product being launched.
- This could be a problem with the product or version being used.
- Open the license file in Notepad and confirm what product and version it should be running.
- If the license does not contain the product and version needed, please feel free to contact Licensing.
3. A Fingerprint (Computer ID) mismatch was encountered between the license and the computer in use.
- Nodelocked licenses, as they are called, are just that; locked to a particular node (i.e. computer) name.
- This prevents one license from being used on multiple machines.
- This error indicates that the name of the computer does not match the name on the license. Note that the error message dialog box lists the actual name of the computer.
- Confirm your computer name:
- Windows 2000: start > settings > control panel > system > network identification
- Windows XP: start > control panel > system > computer name
- To fix this, contact please feel free to contact Licensing.

The error 1053 is a Microsoft error message. In the SELECTserver Gateway’s cause, this issue is either caused by .NET 4.0 is not installed or the .NET 4.0 installations is corrupted. To resolve the issue, please run the dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe file (Run as administrator) located in the SELECTServer_09.00.00.112 extraction folder to install and repair the .Net 40 installation and retest the SELECTserver gateway service again. The current SELECTserver Gateway installer does "NOT" put these prerequisites in place.
The Software Prerequisites - SELECTserver Gateway requires:
- Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0
- MSXML 6.0

Gateway error 1053
When installing the Gateway version 9.0, if .NET 4.0 is not installed the service will not start and error 1053 is displayed. The solution is to download and install .NET 4.0 and then start the Gateway service.

When installing SELECTserver Gateway version 9.0, and .NET 4.0 is not installed, the SELECTserver Gateway
service will not start and will display Error 1053 when you manually attempt to start the service. See Details Below:
Error 1053 is a Microsoft error message. In relation to SELECTserver Gateway, this issue is caused by either .NET 4.0 not being installed on the machine or the .NET 4.0 installation is corrupted.
To resolve the issue, please run the dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe file (Be sure to run as an administrator). This is located in the SELECTServer_09.00.00.XXX extraction folder. If it is already installed, locate and repair the .Net 4.0 installation. Once verified, retest the SELECTserver gateway service again.
NOTE: The current SELECTserver Gateway installer does "NOT" put these prerequisites in place.

The error occurred due to Port 80 on which Select server by default works is being used by another process.
There are two scenarios:
1. The Port 80 is actually being used by another process.
2. The Port is not being used by another process and error is occurring due registry subkey is not configured correctly on the computer that is running IIS for the parameter “ListenOnlyList”
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters\ListenOnlyList
How to check that port is open or not?
You can run the command “netstat -an”. This will display ports list which are listening.
Workaround:
Scenario 1: We can Change the port by using the Steps.
1. Open Internet Service Manager or Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
2. If necessary, expand the Web server that you want, and then expand Web Sites.
3. Right-click the Web site that you want to change.
4. Click Properties.
5. Click the Web Site tab.
6. Change the TCP Port Number in the TCP Port edit box (or click Advanced for multiple Port settings).
7. Click OK to save the changes.

Note: Once you change the port in IIS. Please add the port number on client License Management Tool.

Overview
All version 8.9 or newer software is activated against a SELECTserver license server.
Activation of the software is achieved by entering a server name and site activation key into the product. The Server Name and Site activation key are entered into the "Product Activation Wizard" or into the “License ManagementTool”.
There are two different ways to use the SELECTserver
- Hosted: Your applications connect directly to a Bentley Hosted SELECTserver via the internet using the server name selectserver.bentley.com. If you are using the Hosted SELECTserver, please see Activating Against the Bentley Hosted SELECTserver for activation instructions.
- Deployed: With Bentley approval, you have a SELECTserver installed locally. Your applications connect to your locally installed SELECTserver using your local server name. The SELECTserver itself connects to a Bentley server to pull down a list of products.
For SELECT users with Deployed Licenses...
Product Activation Wizard Instructions
You may be put straight into the “Product Activation Wizard,” If the Product Activation Wizard does not prompt upon launching the application, you can actiavte using the License Mangement Tool.
Once in the Product Activation Wizard, you are given the following options:
- “SELECT subscriber activating against a hosted (Bentley) SELECT Server.”
- "SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECT server.”
- “NON-SELECT or Node locked user”
- “Evaluation Only – No license information”
You will want to verify that SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECTserver is selected.
Once selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.
When selecting the "SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECTserver," the server name and Site Activation Key will be blank.
Fill in the Server Name in the Server Name box. The Server Name will be the name of the machine name running the SELECTserver service.
Fill in the Site Activation Key in the Site Activation Key box. Due to the length of the site activation key, it is recommended that each user copy and paste the information directly into the license management tool. Also, be sure there are no extra spaces before or after the server name and site activation key as this can prevent a proper activation.
Additional Note: Please be sure you are not entering the Server Activation Key. If you are a site administrator, you can find your Site Activation Key on the Administration Page under License Management>View License File
Once completed, select Next>
Depending on what version of software in being installed, the country where the product will be in use may have to be selected.
Once a country of use is selected, Next>
The following screen is titled "License Checkout". Please note that using a checked out license is only intended if you will be without an internet connection for an extended period of time. If you will be connected to the internet at most times, a checked out license is not needed, and you can select Next> to Finish activation.
If the Product Activation Wizard does not prompt upon launching the application, you can actiavte using the License Mangement Tool.

A.)My recommendation would be to start fresh and remove all of the programs. Then begin by first installing SELECTserver 9 on your server, per the link provided above,and activating it with your Serial Number and Server Activation Key.
B.)Once the SELECTserver is activated, install Maxsurf on the client machine (including all of the prerequisites) and activate it against the SELECTserver application.

While I believe this should be possible, at current this is not a supported installation method for Bentley software. I will verify this with a Maxsurf Specialist and update this answer upon receiving new information.

Researching the issue further, I have found that Bentley Communications PowerView calls for a license for two product IDs: 1568 and 1940. Bentley Communications PowerView cannot work without a license for both Bentley Communications PowerView and Bentley Map PowerView.
There are two hallmarks to look for in identifying a missing license as the problem:
- When looking at the License Management Tool, your Bentley Communications PowerView is Activated, but it also lists Bentley Map PowerView as Disabled or Disconnected.
- When launching Bentley Communications PowerView, you are prompted to activate Bentley Map PowerView.
I am working with this user directly to correct this issue for his account. I am am also working to find a permanent resolution to prevent others from encountering the same situation. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Overview
When licensing a pre-XM application with a standalone Nodelock license file, the license file should be delivered from Bentley with the correct file name. Copy the attachment to the appropriate directory. Once the license file is in place, launch the product and it should start.
If necessary, see below for a list of license file names and locations.
If you are running a pre-XM application with server-based licensing, please refer to Pointer Files Explained for Pre-XM Products, before proceeding.
Please note, if you are working on a 64-bit operating sytem, you may need to use Program Files (x86) in place of Program Files in the directory paths specified below. Most of these applications are not certified on newer operating systems. Please be aware that issues may arise when installing an older application on a newer operating system.

Overview
Upon opening the SELECTserver Administration page, a message displays informing that the SELECTserver usage logs have not been transmitted. As a result the SELECTserver is left in a disabled state, and the only options along the left hand side links are "Request/Update License File" and "Transmit Usage Logs".
In order to resolve the error message, choose "Transmit Usage Logs" and follow the 4 steps.
When choosing step 1 you may receive the following error message:
0 LOGS FOUND TO PROCESS
If this message appears, it is most likely a result of the SELECTserver Serial Number and Server Activation Key being entered incorrectly or if the SELECTserver service has not been started. The other possibility could have to do with Proxy Server Settings not being correct (Proxy Servers are not required by Bentley, however if the network where SELECTserver is installed requires Proxy Settings, then this information will need to be entered).
The following are solutions to resolve the 0 logs to be processed error:
SOLUTION 1: Manually run the SELECTserver tasks
Please ensure that the SELECTServer service is running.
Open the Administrative Site page.
NOTE: Check the SELECTserver version (bottom left-hand corner of the page). If your version is prior to the 08.11.07.35 version, this process will not be effective. Please go to "SOLUTION 2".
Look down the left hand side of the page under the ADMINISTRATION section there is a link "Manage Services". Select the link
Please note that your SELECTserver service and Bentley SELECTserver Gateway services are running (green) and that there are a few SELECTserver Tasks. We are concerned with the Usage Log Processing, Usage Log Posting, and Data Update Service tasks.
Using the associated "RUN NOW" soft button to the right of each service task run the Usage Log Processing task.
NOTE: The STATE of the task will change from "IDLE" to "RUNNING". Allow the task to complete its processing. The page display is dynamic so you will be able to see the status change back to IDLE when it is done.
You will need to complete this action for all three task in this order.

Upon completion the "Last Run Results" should read "Success" and all of the links down the left-hand side of the Administration Site page should be active.
NOTE: If you were configured for Manual Usage Transmission all of your links will not be active but you will now have "LOGS" to process and can use your normal procedure to complete that task.At the completion of that process all of your links will be active.
To prevent it from happening again:
1. Open the system services (start>run>services.msc)
2. Locate the Bentley SELECTserver service, right click on it, and select properties.
3. Select the recovery tab from the tabs across the top.
4. Set the value for the first failure, second failure and subsequent failures to "restart the service."
5. Set the value for "Restart service after" to how ever long you think the machine takes to reboot. Generally 4-5 minutes is a good number.

Unfortunately the answer is in the details and they are not any really here to provide a solution. Please provide a screen capture of the Administration Site page when it is first opened. In general I like this information to start reviewing an issue.
1) Exact version number of SELECTserver installed.
2) Server or workstation operating system? Is it 32 or 64 bit?
3) What error are you seeing on the server (a screen capture would be helpful) When the admin page first opens what is displayed?
4) What error are you seeing on the client “ if applicable” (a screen capture would be helpful)
5) Zipped copy of the “C:\Program Files\Bentley\SELECTServer\Logs” directory (or the root directory of where you installed the application
6) Copy of your serial number and activation keys
Activation keys are compnay sensitive information so "NEVER" post them on a forum

Overview
Product Activation is the act of authenticating a product for entitled use. If you need assistance activating, please see Product Activation. If you have any trouble activating, please proceed.
If at any point during the below troubleshooting steps you find you need further assistance, please feel free to post to the Community Forum.
Troubleshooting
1. From the client workstation where the software is installed, open the License Management Tool.
From within the License Management Tool, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Options."
Confirm the server name:
- SELECTserver Online: selectserver.bentley.com -- Make sure Bentley has two e's!
- Home Use SELECTserver: selectserver-home.bentley.com -- The -home is sometimes missing.
- Deployed SELECTserver: In most cases, the server name should match the hostname for the server where SELECTserver is installed on your network. Check with your site administrator to make sure you're using the correct server name.
Confirm the site activation key:
- Given the length of the site activation key, we recommend copying and pasting the site activation key.
- Make sure there are no leading or trailing spaces. Copying and pasting sometimes results in an extra space at the end.
- The site activation key is case sensitive. All letters should be CAPITALIZED.
- Anything which looks like an 'O' is a zero (0). Our keys do not use the letter O.
Click "Test Connection". You should get a message stating “SELECT Server and Activation key verified.
You could also get the following messages:
- “An error has occurred while attempting to verify the server and activation key” -- This means the server specified could not be reached.
- Try checking off “Use HTTPS” under protocol, your network may require it.
- There may be a firewall or proxy server preventing communication with the server. Review our information on connecting to Bentley servers through firewall or proxy servers.
- See the next step for information on verifying your connection to your SELECTserver.
- “Server does not support this activation key.” -- This means s connection to the server specified was able to be made, but the Site Activation Key is incorrect.
- Return to the previous step to confirm Server Name and Site Activation Key.
2. Verify that you are able to connect with your SELECTserver.
- SELECTserver Online (Hosted)
- Are you able to access www.bentley.com?
- Yes, in Internet Explorer: This indicates you are connected to the internet and your settings are allowing communication with Bentley's server. Bentley's License Management Tool uses Internet Explorer's internet settings to communicate with our server.
- Yes, in another browser: This indicates you are connected to the internet, but your Internet Explorer's internet settings may be preventing communication with our server. Try in Internet Explorer.
- No, not at all: There is a problem with your internet connection or firewall on that computer. Please consult with your internal support to resolve this issue.
- Deployed SELECTserver (Local)
- Go to Start > Run. Enter 'cmd' and click 'Okay'. This will open a command prompt. In this new window, enter 'ping <servername>' where <servername> is the name of your SELECTserver which you have set in your License Management Tool.
- If you get a response, you're able to communicate with your server.
- If you do not get a response, check with your network administrator to resolve your connectivity issue.
3. Verify your license is up to date on your SELECTserver Administration Site.
- Go to your SELECTserver Administration Site
- SELECTserver Online (Hosted): http://selectserver.bentley.com/bss/admin/
- Deployed SELECTserver (Local): http://yourservername/bss/admin/ where 'yourservername' is the name of the server where the SELECTserver software is installed.
- Go to 'View License File' under the 'License Management' menu.
- Verify that a license is listed for the product you are trying to activate.
- Verify that the expiration date for that license is valid (any date after today).
4. From within the License Management Tool, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Send Logs Now." This forces the workstation to re-establish connection with the server. Repeat up to three times.
5. Try to activate on another machine. If another machine can establish a connection, investigate any potential differences between the two computers.
