Forum Post: Re: Clash Detection Licensing in MicroStation
A little explanation about Passports. Previously, when you purchased a MicroStation license, you received a ProjectWise Passport for free. However, earlier this year, Bentley made a change with the ProjectWise Passport. It was combined with the AssetWise Passport and renamed to Bentley Passport. This new Passport is no longer available to purchase and is no longer free with MicroStation.

However, after doing a little more research, it turns out that Clash Detection does not utilize a Bentley Passport license. (Sorry for the confusion!) It actually requires its own Clash Resolution Visa license. The Visa is also a named user license and functions similarly to a Passport license; However, the Visa is not being automatically billed for at contract renewal.

If the user uses the Clash Detection functionality within MicroStation, it will work for 30 days without a license. After the trial period, it will move into demo mode. Hope this helps!
Why don't Bentley tell us about these sort of things properly as this is the first I heard of this? As SELECT payers I would have thought that we should have been informed on this type of thing. What is the use of having an account manager who doesn't let us know what is changing. What else has changed I wonder and more to the point how do I find out?

We do not have a ready solution for this. Please, upload all SelectServer log files you will find at C:\Program Files\Bentley\SELECTserver\Logs zipped to our secure file upload area: communities.bentley.com/.../be-communities-secure-file-upload.aspx for the investigation.

Please do not attach the log files directly to this post as they contain confidential data.

Overview

All version 8.9 or newer software is activated against a SELECTserver license server.

Activation of the software is achieved by entering a server name and site activation key into the product. The Server Name and Site activation key are entered into the "Product Activation Wizard" or into the “License ManagementTool”.

For NON-SELECT users, the server name will be ProductActivation.bentley.com.

Please Note:

Non-SELECT licensing is version and machine specific. You may not freely switch between different versions of the same application.

If you require the ability to run multiple versions of the same software, you may wish to investigate Bentley SELECT. The licensing options available under SELECT allow you to run multiple versions of the same application via the SELECTserver Gateway.

More information about SELECT can be found here:

http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Subscriptions/Bentley+SELECT/

Obtaining your Bentley Software License

Your Products need to connect SELECTserver OnLine in order to authenticate and check-out your license. Once the check-out is successful, you will not need to keep a connection to SELECTserver OnLine.

In order to activate and check-out a license you will need to enter an activation key and server name into the product when it starts up after installation, then continue with a license check-out.  This will remove the license from SELECTserver OnLine and make it available on the machine on which you performed the check-out.  Once again, this machine will no longer need to connect to SELECTserver OnLine until you need to renew it or move it to another machine. Please see below for the activation details.

Product Activation Wizard Instructions

You may be put straight into the “Product Activation Wizard,” If the Product Activation Wizard does not prompt upon launching the application, you can actiavte using the License Mangement Tool.

Once in the Product Activation Wizard, you are given the following options:

 • SELECT subscriber activating against a hosted (Bentley) SELECT Server.
 • "SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECT server.
 • NON-SELECT or Node locked user
 • Evaluation Only – No license information

You will want to verify that NON-SELECT or Node locked user is selected.

Once selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

On the next screen, you will be asked about your "License Information."  You are given the following options:

 • I have a license file ready to import
 • I have an activation key
 • I do not have any licensing information

Typically you will have an activation key to activate with. This is sent through fulfillment documentation once the perpetual license is created.

Once selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

When selecting the "NON-SELECT or Node locked user," the server name will be filled in by default.

Fill in the Site Activation Key in the Site Activation Key box. Due to the length of the site activation key, it is recommended that each user copy and paste the information directly into the license management tool.  Also, be sure there are no extra spaces before or after the server name and site activation key as this can prevent a proper activation.

Once completed, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

Depending on what version of software in being installed, the country where the product will be in use may have to be selected.

Once a "Country of Use" is selected, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

On the next screen, you are prompted with a "License Checkout" dialog.  As a NON-SELECT user, you must use a checked out license.

The box next to "Use a checked out license," should be checked by default, but if it is not, be sure to do so.  Fill out all fields on the License Checkout screen.

Once completed, click Next> in the bottom right corner.

The final screen will give you a summary of the licensing activation you just processed.  Click "Finish."

You're product is now activated and ready for use!

I understand your frustration; there are many product and licensing changes as Bentley grows our product lines in order to better serve our users. In relation to this Passport change, accounts are being contacted individually at renewal time to discuss the billing changes.
Thanks for the information. We are going through our renewal at the moment but no one has mentioned this to us. If our account manager doesn't let me know who will? Bentley have a big problem with getting changes out to us users, as we don't all use the forums.

Bentley PowerMap Field for Communications (Product ID 1568) was renamed after version 8.5 to Bentley Communications PowerView (Product ID 1568). This is essentially the same application and uses the same license.

Bentley Map PowerView (Product ID 1940) is a separate application.

Bentley PowerMap Field (Product ID 1145) is a separate application.

Bentley View (Product ID 1186) is a separate application.

It can be easy to confuse these applications when looking for them on the Bentley downloads web page.  I would look at the installed application’s Help>about for the exact naming convention of the application installed.

The reason of the issue was MSDE database reached its 2GB size limit. User solved the issue by creating a new database for SelectServer. An alternate solution is a) upgrading SelectServer from 8.11.XX.XX to V9 and using the Data Retention feature to only keep a configured amount of usage history in the DB or b) manually upgrading MSDE to MS SQL 2005 Express which has 4 GB DB size limit and changing the SelectServer database Compatibility Mode to 90 (MS SQL 2005). For more information on how to change the Compatibility Mode refer to this Wiki article: communities.bentley.com/.../4865.aspx

Forum Post: Re: Promis-e version 8.11.7.82 for MicroStation Powerdraft V8i does not activate properly

Please note that you have licenses for promis.e Professional Stand Alone and promis.e Professional for AutoCAD.

To run promis.e StandAlone you do not need any additional platform (such as MicroStation PowerDraft) therefore you were not provided with a license for MicroStation PowerDraft. This is the reason why your PowerDraft is running in non activated mode.

To solve this issue please download promis.e v8i (StandAlone).

Regarding the issue with a download from the fulfilment document, please:

1.      Turn off a pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer by going to Tools -> Pop-up Blocker -> Turn Off Pop-up Blocker

2.      Add www.bentley.com to Trusted Sites in IE by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Trusted Sites -> Sites

3.      Change a security level for this webpage to Low in IE by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Trusted Sites -> Custom level… and change drop down list to Low.

Then please click on the link in the fulfillment document to download promis.e StandAlone.

Where is the License Tool located?

The License Tool can be accessed from the "Account Management" area of SELECTservices Online. You will need your SELECTservices username and password to login.

Who can access the License Tool?

Only SELECTservices Site Administrators or those users that the Site Administrators have given permission to will have access to the License Tool.

What can I do with the License Tool?

You can access your licensing information for your applications from the License Tool whether you use SELECTserver Online, a locally deployed SELECTserver or older nodelocked licenses. You will see three 'View' buttons, one for each configuration type.

SELECTserver Online (Hosted Server Information): Retrieve your server name and site activation key needed to activate your applications here. You will also get a 'Manage' link which directs you to the SELECTserver Online Administration Site where you can further manage your licenses.

Deployed SELECTserver (SELECT Server(s)): For newer versions of SELECTserver (8.9 and higher), you can retrieve the licensing information you need (server serial number, server activation key and site activation key) to complete a new SELECTserver Installation by using the 'Resend License' button. For older versions of SELECTserver (8.5 and lower), you can update your SELECTserver name and retrieve your updated license file. You can also use the 'Request Upgrade' button to request that your SELECTserver license be upgraded to the newest format or moved to SELECTserver Online.

Nodelocked (Nodelocked and Unassigned): You can change the computer name for your older (e.g. MicroStation/J or MicroStation V8 2004) nodelocked licenses here or retrieve updated license files when your contract renews. If you need to upgrade a version J license to a V8 2004 license, you can also do that here.

Can I use the License Tool to upgrade more than one serial number at a time?

No. The License Tool is only used to upgrade one serial number at a time. You can go through the process for each license you need to upgrade or contact Bentley Sales Support.

What if I have Engineering Configurations on my MicroStation/J license?

If you have Engineering Configurations on your MicroStation/J license you will only be allowed to use the License Tool to change the computer name on your MicroStation/J license. You should not attempt to upgrade the serial number to MicroStation V8 until the Engineering Configurations for MicroStation V8 become available.

After I submit my upgrade, what happens next?

Once the requested changes have been processed, a confirmation E-mail including the re-license will be sent to the E-mail Delivery Address for that serial number.

What information is needed where it says "Computer Name"?

The Computer Name requirement for Version 7.0 or higher MicroStation products is not the computer's brand name. It is the Windows-assigned computer name/code identified in the Licensing Information dialog when you run the most current MicroStation products. You can also obtain the Computer Name from the Identification tab in the Network or System properties dialog box in Windows.

Overview

RAM, STAAD, AutoPIPE, SACS, MaxSurf, and MultiFrame products must obtain licenses to open, and these licenses are returned when the product is closed. The License Management Tool installed on a workstation is helpful for determining what licenses are available for use, but it is not helpful for determining where those licenses are currently in use. Additionally, the License Management Tool is useful for manually returning licenses on a particular workstation only. Fortunately, SELECTserver provides "site administrators" with a tool called the site administration page that can address this. Licenses can be viewed for the entire site, and licenses can be checked in from this tool if necessary.

The site administration page is accessed using a web browser i.e. Internet Explorer. If your licenses are managed by Bentley's Hosted SELECTserver (called SELECTserver OnLine), go to the following address:
http://selectserver.bentley.com/bss/admin/

A login screen like the one below will appear. A Bentley SELECT login with administrator rights is required to access the "hosted" SELECTserver. If you do not know the identity of your Bentley Site Administrator, or do not have a Site Administrator, please contact Bentley Technical Support for further assistance.

If your licenses are managed on a server of your own running our SELECTserver software (called a "deployed" server), go to the following address, replacing "servername" with the name of your license server:
http://servername/bss/admin/

Once on the site administration web page, locate License Management in the navigation bar along the top. Place your mouse over it, and select Checkedout License List from the drop-down menu.

The following page displays all licenses that are currently in use, complete with the product, user, and computer name.

If you are a multi-site administrator, please select a site from the drop-down menu in the upper right corner first to see the licenses for that site. If you manage one site only, the drop-down menu will automatically select the site for you.

To manually return or "check in" a license, click the Check-In button to the left of a license listing (circled in the screenshot below).

Important: Licenses should only be manually returned if they failed to return to the license server after the program was closed.

The article “How to install the SELECTserver application” online will provide the links to information you need to install the SELECTserver.

http://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/how-to-install-the-selectserver-application.aspx

Once you download and install the latest release of the SELECTserver application. Currently it is version number 09.00.00.113 an available from our
SELECTservices website. Ensure that you get the version that matches your Operating system either 32 or 64 bits. They are clearly marked. Unpack the downloaded executable. By default it goes into the following directory

C:\BentleyDownloads\SELECTserver_09.00.00.113”

The name may vary to the proper version number for the specific build. In sided this directory you will find a SELECTserverHelp.pdf file. There is an Installation Guide section that will walk you through the process.

The link below is to the License As Expired wiki page on how to address the issue.

communities.bentley.com/.../3281.aspx

Becaue of there being no internet cnnection the manual process must be adopted.

MANUALLY:

To manually import the license, you need to contact Bentley SELECTsupport (Administration and Activation) for a new XML license file. Once this license file is received choose the Import Server License link found on the left hand side of the Administration Site under License Management. Once you are inside the link, verify that the Serial Number and Activation Key (which is the Server Activation Key in this case) is correct, browse to where you have saved the XML License File, and press OK.

The page will process and a new line should appear with a (+) at the beginning. This is the new license, and will need to be accepted for it is applied. To accept this license scroll to the right and in the upper right hand side of the screen there is an Accept button. Selecting the Accept button will update your License and the

message will go away. It may still be necessary to complete the “electronic” steps. The overall issue is that at times the operating systems stores old information and it taks a little effort to get the OS to let go of the cached information.

Forum Post: Re: Activation Status window says Trial Expires

$

The suggested method of resolving this issue is by following the below technote:

communities.bentley.com/.../3384.aspx

The Activation Status window of the License Management Tool is useful for quickly determining the license status of Bentley products that utilize "trust licensing." Trust licensing products periodically report to the license server as they are used. Because such products must report to the server at least every 30 days, the Activation Status quickly shows how much time remains. RAM, STAAD, and AutoPIPE products, however, utiliize licenses differently. Licenses are temporarily locked to a workstation each time such a product is used. Consequently, the activation status for these products will appear as a trial period when not in use. The activation status for RAM, STAAD, and AutoPIPE products can be safely ignored. The products will display licensing errors when opened if a license-related problem exists.
