Forum Post: CAD Administrators - A Challenge
After 20 odd years in this industry it frustrates me that I always feel like it's a fight to justify my job and what it entails. So, here's a challenge. Recognise what CAD Admins do for their firms and Bentley and make our lives easier. Here's a few thoughts. Let firms nominate a CAD Admin for every 'x' number of licenses. This allows for bigger firms who look after more staff to nominate more than one Admin. Each CAD Admin nominated gets their license usage for free. This allows us to test software, builds systems and so on without being a monetary burden on the business. Especially important for smaller firms. Open up a Community for Admins to share ideas and issues. Commit to supporting regional Admin Conferences each year. Each Admin nominated must commit to: Completing 'x' number of Learn hours per year. Commit to one presentation at a Local User group per year. Complete an article on your Admin experiences. Do's and don'ts, cheats etc. The idea here is to help other Admins and Bentley to understand what our issues are. Commit to 'x' number of hours per hear in Early Access programs. Failure to complete tasks means a firm could lose its CAD Admin status. All just suggestions, but something like this can make a big difference. How about working with us?

Scope : The m achines shown in the report that are used to determine the qualification are based on the following: The user has accessed a Bentley d esktop or c lient application that generat es billable usage. F or example, 10 minutes or greater for a desktop application such as MicroStation . Excluded Products : SELECTserver, SELECTserver Gateway, CONNECTION Client, and Bentley View V8i . The access h as occurred within the past 60 days . Aft er 60 days without product use the machine will no longer appear on the report . Registration Process : A user must re gister on each of the machines in the Earned Value Discount Scorecard to satisfy the registration requirement . You can open the Log Collector by going to the Windows Start menu and typing in “Bentley Log Collector” as shown above. The CONNECTION Client Log Collector was added in version 10.00.13.17 and higher. Forum Post: No Entitlement error Procedures from Bentley?
Hi, I have a user who logs in from a computer in the office and a computer at home. Today, 20 minutes before a conference call that I had to attend, she texts me to tell me that Microstation on her home computer says that it has "No Entitlements" (even though her work computer is fine). I did a remote log-in to her computer and tried a couple things, including "refresh policy" and "activation wizard". The activation wizard ran and reported errors with Microstation and Bentley View. Then I called Bentley tech support (15 minutes before my conference call). The guy there tried a couple things, including logging in with my username and password, with no luck. I had to hang up on him and allow him to continue the remote access unattended. The bottom line was that nothing got fixed and my user could not use Microstation. I eventually fixed it by finding and installing an update to the Connection Client. This exercise took 30 to 45 minutes of my time, and it left my employee stranded for 90 minutes without the tool that she need to do her job. So that is two+ hours of labor spent on a Bentley software failure. The nice thing is that this is Friday morning (Pacific Time) (2pm Eastern Time) instead of Friday afternoon when Bentley is closed. The bad thing is that we have paid $x,xxx for a Microstation license and we pay $x,xxx per seat per year for the service contract to have our employees wasting time because Microstation won't start. Question #1 for Bentley: What are the procedures to debug / fix the licensing client? (I assume check the connection, refresh the policy, etc.) I also know that there are licensing cache / database files that can be deleted when they get corrupted--what was the procedure for deleting them? What other steps can be done to fix this issue? Question #2 for Bentley: When it is 2pm Friday afternoon (5:01 pm Eastern time), and we have a big dead line that we are working late for and working on the weekend for, and either the license server goes down or a license client has issues, how do we get Microstation to work through the weekend until we can call tech support? Also, what is the procedure to back-charge Bentley for time and expenses due to the failure of our already-paid-for-software refusing to operate? --Thanks, --Robert P.S. The 7 day "grace" period is ridiculous--it is reasonable to expect a computer not to used for a week. If then go to use that computer and don't have an internet connection,or the server is down, then how do you start Microstation, which you are fully entitled to use? The 30 day grace period is much more reasonable. I mention this because it leads to the same situation. Also, this particular "No Entitlement" error had no warning. The tech support guy apparently was unable to solve it on his own. I suspect that I was really lucky in not having the latest Connection Client installed because I suspect that installing the upgrade reset the cache / database files, which allowed things to work again.

User added to Managed user list. (IP added, Email added) Have a site Key - used License Management Tool activation wizard "Product activation complete, You may now use your product". Sent Logs Used Bentley Licensing Tool (WTF two licensing tools... so much fun) Activation still says "TrialExpired", also sent logs. Logged into User's Bentley CONNECTION Client successfully on desktop. All of my other users have no issues.

Good Morning Abhishek, Thank you for the quick reply. The RAM Elements Software is a part of the Connect client. As I said, the user is logged into the connect client desktop app, and the Licensing tool still says "Trial expired" Access denied.

Wiki Page: Overview of Bentley Licensing Tool
The Bentley Licensing Tool provides activation information for products utilizing Subscription Entitlement Service. It is installed with CONNECTION Client. Below is an overview of the tool and its various functions. Opening the Bentley Licensing Tool Open the Windows Start menu. Type "Bentley Licensing". Select Bentley Licensing Tool from the search results that appear. The Entitlements Tab When the Bentley Licensing Tool first opens, it displays the Entitlements tab. If the CONNECTION Client is signed in, a Bentley login will appear in the upper left corner just above the tabs. Products appear in the Entitlements list if they have communicated with Bentley before. They will communicate the following information: Product: This is the name of the product using Subscription Entitlement Service. Products using SELECTserver will not appear in this list. Feature String: Some products, such as the OpenFlow (i.e. water) products, provide feature levels that are treated like a separate license. All other products will display a blank Feature String value. Expires: If a product is permitted to run offline, the date shows the last day the product can run without signing into the CONNECTION Client again. After this date, a sign in is required. Reserved: A license can be locked to a machine for extended offline use. A Yes value means the product does not require a network connection to activate until the expiration date. Allowed Offline: By default, products will function for a limited time (i.e. usually 7 days) if a user is not signed in. This ensures that products are still accessible during a temporary network outage. However, administrators can disable this feature on a product basis as a preventative for unexpected usage. A No value means you must be signed into CONNECTION Client to use the product. Alerting Setting: This field will show you whether license alerts are enabled or disabled for the application. The following values may appear here: Alert - The product checks for other active users of the same product before opening. A license alert will be displayed if a configurable threshold of active licenses is exceeded. Disabled - The product opens without checking for other active users. License Type: This field will usually show a value of Commercial for production licenses. Access: This field shows whether the product is permitted. A number of values may appear here: Allowed - The product is permitted and is activated. Trial - The product is not permitted, but a trial period is available. Denied - The product is not permitted and will either open with limited functionality or not at all. Offline - The product is permitted but is not signed in. Username: This field shows the Bentley login associated with the product. The Checkout License Tab Product licenses can be locked to the computer for extended use apart from an Internet connection. The Reserve License tab provides this functionality. The top pane provides a list of licenses. Although it shows two rows by default, the window can be made taller by dragging the window handle in the lower right corner. Additionally, columns can be filtered by clicking the filter icon as shown below. To reserve a license: Select it in the top pane. Specify an expiration date using the calendar icon located along the right edge. Enter a four part version number corresponding to the version of your product. Click the Reserve button. The bottom pane displays a list of licenses locked to the computer. To return a license prior to the expiration date, select it in the bottom pane, and click the Release button. The Product Status Tab More detailed information is displayed on the Product Status tab. The following information is displayed: Product: This is the name of the product using Subscription Entitlement Service. Products using SELECTserver will not appear in this list. Feature String: Some products, such as the OpenFlow (i.e. water) products, provide feature levels that are treated like a separate license. All other products will display a blank Feature String value. Last Version Started: The four-part version number of your Subscription Entitlement Service product will display here. Earlier versions using SELECTserver will not be displayed. Previous Status: The activation status of the product the last time it was opened will display here. Description: A more detailed description of the Previous Status will be displayed in this column. Importing a License Licenses can be reserved from the Entitlement Management site on behalf of a user and saved as a file. To import the file, select "Import Policy..." from the File menu, and select the .belic file. A dialog will confirm whether the license file imported successfully. If the client machine is signed into CONNECTION Client, click the Sync button on the Entitlements tab as shown below to refresh the list. If successful, the product with the imported license will display "Yes" in the Reserved column. Important : If CONNECTION Client is not signed in, the entitlements list will not update when a license file is imported, but the license is still applied. The intended product should open without licensing errors. Configuring Proxy Settings Subscription Entitlement Service products do not utilize proxy settings from the system configuration or from the License Management Tool utilized by SELECTserver-based products. Please configure proxy settings in the Bentley Licensing Tool using the following steps: Select Options from the Tools menu. On the Proxy Configuration tab that appears, select the first checkbox if you use a proxy server. Enter the computer name of the proxy server. If a port must be specified, append the server name with a colon (:) and the port number (i.e. ProxyServer:8080). To determine what proxy settings (if any) are in use, please refer to the following wiki , specifically the section titled "Determine whether a proxy server is in use." If user authentication is required as well, select the second checkbox, and enter user credentials. Click the Test Proxy Configuration link in the lower right to confirm proper configuration. If the configuration test is successful, click the OK button to save changes. Configuring Error Logging Settings Subscription Entitlement Service provides diagnostic logging to assist with troubleshooting efforts. By default, the Bentley Licensing Tool maintains a detailed rolling log that is sufficient for most troubleshooting, but configuration options can optionally be configured using the following steps within the Bentley Licensing Tool: Select Options from the Tools menu. Click the Error Logging tab. The Minimum Log Level shows the level of detail to capture. Trace is the default selection which captures all diagnostic information. Each selection below Trace captures less diagnostic information. Lower levels allow diagnostic information to be captured over a greater time span before the oldest diagnostic data is deleted. Client Logging is disabled by default. Enable it to capture additional diagnostic information for each Subscription Entitlement Service application. To retrieve diagnostic data, please open the Windows Start menu, type Log Collector , and choose Bentley Log Collector from the search results. Click the Collect button in the window that appears, and save the resulting zip archive. Send the zip archive to Bentley for further analysis. Important: The LogCollector utility is included with CONNECTION Client 10.00.13.17 and later. To manually gather diagnostic logs for earlier versions, please perform the following steps instead: Open the Windows Start menu, type the following, and press Enter: %LocalAppData%\Bentley Zip the Logs folder in the window that appears. This includes logs for CONNECTION Client itself. Open the Licensing folder. Zip the Logs folder in the window that appears. This includes logs for the Bentley Licensing Service.
