Product(s): SELECTserver Version(s): 09.01.00.31 Environment: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 Area: Installation / Configuration Subarea: N/A The following document provides instructions for downloading, installing, and configuring SELECTserver on an in-house server, known as a deployed SELECTserver. Important: These instructions only apply to users who have not already migrated to Bentley's online licensing solution, known as Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices (i.e. the "hosted" server or SELECTserver Online). Background SELECTserver is responsible for activating Bentley products, collecting usage data from client machines, and transmitting usage data to Bentley. While the component can be installed on a client machine, Bentley recommends installing it on a server that is always on to ensure availability and proper operation. A server operating system is also recommended since client operating systems impose a limit of ten simultaneous connections. Steps to Accomplish Download SELECTserver from Software Downloads Open the CONNECT Center . Scroll to the bottom, and click the Software Downloads tile in the My Services section. Provide a Bentley login with software download access if prompted. Enter SELECTserver in the search bar in the upper right, and choose SELECTserver from suggestions list that appears. Choose SELECTserver from the search results page that appears. By default, the 32-bit (i.e. x86) installer is displayed. Most modern operating systems are now 64-bit (i.e. x64). To choose the 64-bit installer, please select x64 from the Architecture drop-down menu, and click the Apply button along the right edge. Click the blue Download button next to the product listing that appears. For verification purposes, the 64-bit installer should show a size of 29 MB as opposed to 27 MB for the 32-bit installer. Agree to the download terms, and save the installer. Install SELECTserver Before proceeding with the installation, ensure that Internet Information Services (IIS) is installed. This can be accomplished by adding the Web Server (IIS) role from the Server Manager. If upgrading from a previous version, please uninstall the previous version of SELECTserver from the Programs and Features control panel first. If prompted whether to keep license settings, choose to keep them. Execute the installer, and click the Next button the initial screen that appears. Accept the legal terms, and click the Next button. In most cases the default installation location is sufficient, but change it as needed. Click the Next button. The default features are sufficient in most cases. If no pre-XM products will be utilized, the SELECT Server Gateway feature can optionally be disabled. Click the Next button to proceed. Enter the SELECTserver serial number and activation key. Do not enter the site activation key used on client machines as it differs. If upgrading from a previous version of SELECTserver, these fields will be populated automatically. Click the Next button to proceed. Enter a site activation key for configuration of the SELECTserver Gateway. This is the same site activation key used on client machines. Click the Next button to proceed. Click the Install button to proceed. Once the installation completes, click the Finish button. Configuring the license database The SELECTserver Database Setup window will automatically launch following the installation. If upgrading from a previous installation of SELECTserver, the connection settings will be populated automatically. If performing a clean installation, enter the connection settings for an existing instance of SQL Server. SELECTserver 09.01.00.xx does not automatically install a database instance . The following instructions can be used to download and install SQL Server 2016 Express. If performing a clean installation, SELECTserver Database Setup will appear like below: Update the server and user credential fields. If using the SQL Server 2016 Express instructions mentioned above, the settings will look similar to these: Click the New button, enter a database name, and click the OK button to proceed. If upgrading from a previous installation of SELECTserver instead, the connection settings will be populated automatically. Click the OK button to upgrade the database for use with the new version of SELECTserver. Import a license file Following the creation of a new database, a license file must be retrieved when opening the SELECTserver administration site for the first time: A serial number and server activation key should be present already when the Configuration Wizard first opens. These settings were entered during the installation process. If empty, the settings can be obtained from a fulfillment document provided by Bentley Financial Operations. Click the Next button to proceed. Enter proxy settings if required to access the Internet. Otherwise leave them blank. Click the Next button to proceed. To receive error notifications via email, enter mail server settings. Otherwise, leave them blank. These settings can be entered later from the Server Settings page. Click the Next button to proceed. By default, SELECTserver sends usage logs automatically to keep the licensing component functional. If the server does not have access to the Internet, then tick the checkbox to send logs manually. Click the Next button to proceed. By default, SELECTserver retrieves a license file by communicating with Bentley over the Internet. If the server does not have an Internet connection, you can obtain a license file from Bentley Financial Operations that can be imported here. Click the Next button to proceed. A summary screen will appear with the settings entered. Click the Finish button to retrieve or import the license file. A results screen will appear. If no errors are present, click the Close button to close the Configuration Wizard and proceed to the SELECTserver administration site. Please note that a warning may appear indicating that services are not running. Click Yes to open the Manage Services page to start them. we just switch to Microstation V8i SS10 08.11.09.908 and CC 10.00.15.12 and it's not helping. My user gets the error message that the trial version will expire in 7 days. I tried activating the application but it won't let me update it.

Forum Post: ContextCapture License Activation Issue
Hi, My company has commercial licenses for Context Capture, however I can not get it to activate, it is stuck on "Non-commercial" and this is not good as it is leaving "non-commercial" watermarks on orthophotos. I am having this issue on a Windows 10 machine running ContextCapture Update 12. I have tried to uninstall/reinstall ContextCapture. Running the Activation Wizard multiple times (and it reports that it has activated ContextCapture). Have also went into the License Manager Tool to send logs to the selectserver multiple times. None of these things will get CC Update 12 to recognize the commercial license. I have successfully activated ContextCapture on another machine running Windows 7 and ContextCapture Update 10. I will not attempt to try Update 12 on this machine as this is the only working machine right now. Anyone know what else I can do?

Forum Post: Bug in Connection Client 10.00.15.11 and 10.00.15.11
Having recently updated from Connection Client 10.00.14.18 to 10.00.15.11 we experienced an error wherein Connect Edition products throw an error saying that Connection Client is not installed. After updating Connection Client, products appear to work correctly for a while, but at random points, they will start throwing this error message: "This application requires the Connection Client to be installed on your computer. Please install Connection Client 10.0.11.x or higher. In the screencap below, you can see that Connection Client 10.00.15.12 is installed and logged in. Upon further investigation, I found that Connection Client (although running), was no longer installed. All installed files for Connection Client were gone, the desktop icon was gone and the Windows Menu applications icon was gone. I tried reinstalling, but was met with the two options of "repair" or "uninstall." Selecting "repair" does not resolve the issue. After uninstalling, Connection Client can then be reinstalled. After reinstallation, Connection Client functions normally for a while, and then starts throwing the error again. We have determined that this is not caused by our anti-virus or anti-malware settings and appears to be something wrong with Connection Client. We have advised everyone at our site to roll back to Connection Client 10.00.14.18 until the issue is resolved. 10.00.14.18 does not exhibit this error. Bentley reports that they are unable to reproduce the error in 10.00.15.12. Even if there is an anti-malware or anti-virus function that is somehow hard deleting Connection Client without logging any information about the action, this indicates to me that there has simply been a change in Connection Client between 10.00.14.18 and 10.00.15.11 that causes Connection Client to trigger this sort of behavior in our security settings.

Forum Post: RE: Overages have their consequences Bentley
I agree as well. Let the network admins decide if we want to allow uninterrupted work and deal with the cost vs blocking usage\interrupted work. After all its our money that has to pay the bill, why can't we decide if we want to use the product which causes the overage\bill. Every other software does this. Our account rep even try to push use a Overage savings account that we could put money in to cover the overages at a discounted rate. What a joke. Of course it works out in Bentley's best interested, not ours.
↧
Forum Post: RE: Overages have their consequences Bentley
BTW we have tried to utilize Softtrack to prevent overages. It has helped but is not 100% effective, if one of the 2 services stops reporting back to the management server, you can still get into the software and cause an overage. Connect edition has helped with some of our single license products but our Civil product team has a large project and cannot upgrade just yet to the latest versions.

Hi Tuan,
Does that mean MS U10 is not compatible with OBD U5?
It's not about any compatibility, MicroStation and OpenBuildings Designer are two completely separated products based on the same PowerPlatform (engine). But for an installation and a licensing, they can be treated as independent: They can be installed side by side, no folders overlap exists. They use different licenses. What makes you situation more complicated are different versions, so: MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 10 has been the last version using "classic" SELECTserver activation. OpenBuildings Designer CONNECT Edition Update 5 uses new CONNECT licensing. To use OBD U5, ensure CONNECTION client is running, you are logged and OBD license is allowed to be used by your account. There is a wiki about the new licensing. With regards, Jan

Wiki Page: How to bulk checkout licenses from Entitlement Management
For extended offline scenarios beyond the offline period of products (i.e. usually seven days), Subscription Entitlement Service provides the capability to reserve or check out licenses. Computers with Internet access can reserve a license from the Bentley Licensing Tool . For computers without Internet access, license files can be generated from the Entitlement Management website by an administrator from an Internet-connected computer. Instructions are available for generating a license file for a single computer , but for several computers with the same set of checked out licenses, the following instructions should be used instead. Generating license files from Entitlement Management Open the Subscription Services Portal . Only users with the co-administrator role can access the Portal. Click the Entitlement Management tile under Resources. On the Entitlement Management site that appears, click the menu icon in the upper left corner, click the carat icon next to License Checkout to expand it, and select Bulk License Checkout. On the Bulk License Checkout page, click the green New Checkout button along the right edge. In the window that appears, click the Choose File button to select a CSV file containing email address and machine names. Click the "Download a sample" link for an example CSV file. Once a CSV file is selected, it will be validated, and any errors will be displayed. Otherwise, a green message will confirm proper formatting. Enter a name for the bulk checkout. This will appear in the Description column on the Bulk License Checkout page. Under Select Products, enter the name of a product. A drop-down menu will appear with suggested products as you type. If the license covers child products, such as Structural Enterprise, you will be prompted to choose specific products afterwards. Selected products will appear with a mandatory version field that must be filled with a four-part version number. As a best practice, these should match the versions of products installed on the intended workstations. These version numbers can be used later to determine the product versions for which licenses were originally checked out. By default, the Bulk Checkout process will attempt to check out licenses for a year, but this date can be adjusted downward as needed by clicking the calendar icon. Once all settings have been entered, the Bulk License Checkout will highlight with a bright green color. Click it to initiate the checkout process. The Bulk License Checkout page will appear again, displaying the new job at the top of the list. The Status column will show progress of the checkout process. Once complete, the Status column will update, and a Download link will appear in the Download column. Click it to download a zip archive containing the license files for all machines. Open the zip archive to see a list of license files. Each is encoded with a machine name. Importing a license file on client machine Transfer the generated license.belic file to the recipient's computer. Then import the license file via the Bentley Licensing Tool .
Wiki Page: Overview of Bentley Licensing Tool
The Bentley Licensing Tool provides activation information for products utilizing Subscription Entitlement Service. It is installed with CONNECTION Client. Below is an overview of the tool and its various functions. Opening the Bentley Licensing Tool Open the Windows Start menu. Type "Bentley Licensing". Select Bentley Licensing Tool from the search results that appear. The Entitlement Tab When the Bentley Licensing Tool first opens, it displays the Entitlements tab. If the CONNECTION Client is signed in, a Bentley login will appear in the upper left corner just above the tabs. Products appear in the Entitlements list if they have communicated with Bentley before. They will communicate the following information: Product: This is the name of the product using Subscription Entitlement Service. Products using SELECTserver will not appear in this list. Feature String: Some products, such as the OpenFlow (i.e. water) products, provide feature levels that are treated like a separate license. All other products will display a blank Feature String value. Expires: If a product is permitted to run offline, the date shows the last day the product can run without signing into the CONNECTION Client again. After this date, a sign in is required. Reserved: A license can be locked to a machine for extended offline use. A Yes value means the product does not require a network connection to activate until the expiration date. Allowed Offline: By default, products will function for a limited time (i.e. usually 7 days) if a user is not signed in. This ensures that products are still accessible during a temporary network outage. However, administrators can disable this feature on a product basis as a preventative for unexpected usage. A No value means you must be signed into CONNECTION Client to use the product. License Type: This field will usually show a value of Commercial for production licenses. Access: This field shows whether the product is permitted. A number of values may appear here: Allowed - The product is permitted and is activated. Trial - The product is not permitted, but a trial period is available. Denied - The product is not permitted and will either open with limited functionality or not at all. Offline - The product is permitted but is not signed in. Username: This field shows the Bentley login associated with the product. The Reserve License Tab Product licenses can be locked to the computer for extended use apart from an Internet connection. The Reserve License tab provides this functionality. The top pane provides a list of licenses. Although it shows two rows by default, the window can be made taller by dragging the window handle in the lower right corner. Additionally, columns can be filtered by clicking the filter icon as shown below. To reserve a license: Select it in the top pane. Specify an expiration date using the calendar icon located along the right edge. Enter a four part version number corresponding to the version of your product. Click the Reserve button. The bottom pane displays a list of licenses locked to the computer. To return a license prior to the expiration date, select it in the bottom pane, and click the Release button. The Product Status Tab More detailed information is displayed on the Product Status tab. The following information is displayed: Product: This is the name of the product using Subscription Entitlement Service. Products using SELECTserver will not appear in this list. Feature String: Some products, such as the OpenFlow (i.e. water) products, provide feature levels that are treated like a separate license. All other products will display a blank Feature String value. Last Version Started: The four-part version number of your Subscription Entitlement Service product will display here. Earlier versions using SELECTserver will not be displayed. Previous Status: The activation status of the product the last time it was opened will display here. Days Before Displayed: If offline usage is enabled for this product, the offline period for the product will be displayed here. This is the maximum number of days a product can be used apart from an Internet connection. Description: A more detailed description of the Previous Status will be displayed in this column. Importing a License Licenses can be reserved from the Entitlement Management site on behalf of a user and saved as a file. To import the file, select "Import Policy..." from the File menu, and select the .belic file. A dialog will confirm whether the license file imported successfully. If the client machine is signed into CONNECTION Client, click the Sync button on the Entitlements tab as shown below to refresh the list. If successful, the product with the imported license will display "Yes" in the Reserved column. Important : If CONNECTION Client is not signed in, the entitlements list will not update when a license file is imported, but the license is still applied. The intended product should open without licensing errors. Configuring Proxy Settings Subscription Entitlement Service products do not utilize proxy settings from the system configuration or from the License Management Tool utilized by SELECTserver-based products. Please configure proxy settings in the Bentley Licensing Tool using the following steps: Select Options from the Tools menu. On the Proxy Configuration tab that appears, select the first checkbox if you use a proxy server. Enter the computer name of the proxy server. If a port must be specified, append the server name with a colon (:) and the port number (i.e. ProxyServer:8080). To determine what proxy settings (if any) are in use, please refer to the following wiki , specifically the section titled "Determine whether a proxy server is in use." If user authentication is required as well, select the second checkbox, and enter user credentials. Click the Test Proxy Configuration link in the lower right to confirm proper configuration. If the configuration test is successful, click the OK button to save changes. Configuring Error Logging Settings Subscription Entitlement Service provides diagnostic logging to assist with troubleshooting efforts. By default, the Bentley Licensing Tool maintains a detailed rolling log that is sufficient for most troubleshooting, but configuration options can optionally be configured using the following steps within the Bentley Licensing Tool: Select Options from the Tools menu. Click the Error Logging tab. The Minimum Log Level shows the level of detail to capture. Trace is the default selection which captures all diagnostic information. Each selection below Trace captures less diagnostic information. Lower levels allow diagnostic information to be captured over a greater time span before the oldest diagnostic data is deleted. Client Logging is disabled by default. Enable it to capture additional diagnostic information for each Subscription Entitlement Service application. To retrieve diagnostic data, please open the Windows Start menu, type Log Collector , and choose Bentley Log Collector from the search results. Click the Collect button in the window that appears, and save the resulting zip archive. Send the zip archive to Bentley for further analysis. Important: The LogCollector utility is included with CONNECTION Client 10.00.13.17 and later. To manually gather diagnostic logs for earlier versions, please perform the following steps instead: Open the Windows Start menu, type the following, and press Enter: %LocalAppData%\Bentley Zip the Logs folder in the window that appears. This includes logs for CONNECTION Client itself. Open the Licensing folder. Zip the Logs folder in the window that appears. This includes logs for the Bentley Licensing Service. Send both zip archives for further analysis. Other Language Sources Deutsch Español Français Italian
