Applies To Product(s): WaterCAD, WaterGEMS, HAMMER SewerCAD, SewerGEMS, StormCAD, CivilStorm, PondPack, CulvertMaster, FlowMaster, Darwin Designer, Darwin Calibrator, and GISConnect Version(s): V8 XM and later; certain earlier versions using XM licensing Environment: N/A Area: N/A Subarea: N/A Original Author: Bentley Technical Support Group Overview This document describes Haestad-product-specific aspects of XM licensing. Please refer to the general documentation on Bentley's XM licensing if more information is needed. Identifying SELECTserver License Compatible Software Versions When downloading Haestad software from the SELECT Downloads page, the product versions of WaterCAD, WaterGEMS, StormCAD, SewerCAD, PondPack, CulvertMaster, FlowMaster, SewerGEMS, Hammer, GIS Connect and CivilStorm that use SELETserver licensing have a prefix of "Bentley" (for example, "Bentley StormCAD"). SELECTserver License Activation When using SELECTserver licensing, the programs must communicate with Bentley's SELECTserver license manager. Upon first installing a program that uses SELECTserver licensing, the user can use the program for up to 5 days before having to contact the server. However, the pipe/inlet/link amount that is used during the 5 day period is the least amount offered. For example, 250 pipes for WaterGEMS and 5 inlets for SewerCAD. Once this 5-day period has expired, the program will run in demonstration mode and the user will not be able to compute or save model files. The user will be prompted to enter a server name and their organization's Site Activation Key when installing the first SELECTserver-licensed Bentley product on a machine. In the case of a Bentley-hosted license server, the server name will be selectserver.bentley.com. For a deployed license server, the organization's license server name is required. Any other SELECTserver-licensed products installed on the machine will use this same information. The server name and activation key can be entered or changed at any time through the License Management Tool. In the case of a node-locked license, the user will enter the server name "productactivation.bentley.com" and the activation key provided by Bentley. The user will then have to check out the license from the server using the License Management Tool before opening the product. If this is not done, the program will run in demonstration mode and the user will not be able to compute or save model files. For network licenses, once a license has been obtained, the program will be fully operational at the purchased feature level and will not need to communicate with the server for another 30 days. In other words, a SELECTserver product needs to be able to communicate with the server at least once every 30 days. Additional information on using the License Management Tool is provided in the sections that follow. Troubleshooting SELECTserver Licensing for Haestad Products If you have installed a Haestad product that uses SELECTserver licensing and are encountering errors or warnings when launching the product, you may find the following information helpful in troubleshooting the problem issue. About the SELECTserver License Tools It is recommended to familiarize yourself with the two interactive SELECTserver licensing tools, the License Management Tool and the Municipal License Administrator, to better understand SELECTserver licensing in general and how the licenses are configured. Both of these tools are installed during the installation of the SELECTserver-compatible Haestad product and usually reside in the product folder in the Start menu. The License Management Tool is a useful aid for managing checked out or disconnected licenses. It displays the list of available license configurations and allows checking out, checking in, and importing licenses. The products listed depend on what your organization has licensed from Bentley. The Municipal License Administrator is useful for managing default license configurations for products with multiple possible feature configurations. For example, if your organization has a license of WaterCAD for up to 250 pipes, and another license of WaterCAD for 5,000 pipes, this tool allows you to choose the default license used by the individual client machine. Later, if you wish to change the default license configuration, for instance due to different project requirements, the Municipal License Administrator can again be used for this purpose. (Note that even if your organization has only licensed a single configuration for a particular product, this configuration will show up as the default in this tool.) To quickly launch either the License Management Tool or the Municipal License Administrator, go to Start > All Programs > Bentley > product name and select the tool from the menu. You will also need to know the SELECTserver name and Site Activation Key prior to attempting any troubleshooting. (For the Bentley hosted license server, the server name will be selectserver.bentley.com.) Problem 1: On opening the software for the first time, you receive the message: "Site has not been activated with server name and activation key on this machine, and a checked-out license is not available. Please run the License Tool." What it means: This error indicates that the necessary server name and Site Activation Key required to communicate with the license server were not provided during the installation. Communication with the license server for the purpose of logging and tracking licenses requires that the server name and Site Activation Key be inputted. Resolution: If this information was not provided to you prior to installation of the Haestad product, you may need to contact your network administrator or Bentley. However, if you do have this information but did not input it during installation, please follow the steps below to resolve the error message. Go to Start > All Programs > Bentley > product name > License Management Tool. Within the License Management Tool, go to Tools > Options. Enter the server name and Site Activation Key (provided by Bentley). Click Verify. If your license is working properly, you should get a message that the SELECTserver and Activation Key verified. Click Apply and OK, and proceed to step 3 below. If you get the message "Server does not support this Activation Key" when you click Verify, it indicates that the Site Activation Key is either not correct or not current. Please contact Bentley's Technical Support Licensing team to retrieve the correct key before proceeding. Go back to the Tools menu and click Send Logs Now. The Send Logs Now function communicates the current license usage logs from the local machine to the license server for compilation into reports. This function also retrieves the current status of requested licenses. Although this function is automated to run periodically, it is recommended to manually execute this function in order to update the most recent license status before starting a product. Problem 2: On opening the software, you receive the message: "Default license feature configuration not found. Product features may be limited. Please run the License Administrator." What it means: A product has not been set with the default configuration to use, or has perhaps lost a default license configuration previously selected. If you continue to run the product, you will probably have access only to basic features. Resolution: Go to Start > All Programs > Bentley > product name > Municipal License Administrator. Click Refresh Configurations to query the license server for the available licenses and their feature levels. This action should display a list of the products that can be licensed with different feature levels, showing which options are available on your organization's license. Click on the desired default configuration for the product of interest on your computer, and then click Make Default. A pointer appears in the leftmost column, indicating this configuration will be used by default the next time the product is started. When the product starts, usage will be logged against this configuration of the product. In troubleshooting the above problem, if you run the Municipal License Administrator and it appears the default configuration has already been selected (i.e., there is a pointer in the left column), it is sometimes still necessary to click on the configuration and select Make Default again. The "Total" shown in the third column is the number of licenses held by your organization. It should not be viewed as a real-time indicator of network license usage. For accurate usage statistics, use SELECTserver reporting. Problem 3: On opening the software, you receive the message: "You are currently running in disconnected mode. You will need to connect to the SELECTserver within "X" days in order to remain activated. Would you like to run the License Management Tool now?" What it means: The licensing client was unable to contact the license server recently. This may be due to normal networking issues. Note that if the problem is not corrected within the stated number of days, the software will become unusable until the problem is resolved. Resolution: Open the Municipal License Administrator, click Refresh Configurations, choose the license you wish to use from the list, and click Make Default. Try forcing a connection to the license server by first opening the License Management Tool and choose Send Logs Now from the Tools menu. Try opening the software again to see if the problem is resolved. If this problem is occurring on the initial installation of the product, and if you are using the Bentley server as the host server, check if there are any firewalls that may be preventing the connection to the Bentley server. After resolving the firewall issue, try steps 1-3 again. If your organization is using the deployed SELECTserver option (i.e., your organization's server is used for licensing), please contact your network administrator to confirm that the server has connected to the Bentley server at least once in the last 30 days and usage logs have been sent. There could be an issue with network connectivity, or with the validity of your Bentley license. Once you have done this, try steps 1-3 again. Problem 4: On opening the software, you receive the message: "The license server could not be contacted during the required period. Some calculating and printing features will be disabled or, for some products, the application will not run. Please contact the Bentley Technical Support Group." What it means: The license server could not be reached during the allowed disconnected period. Certain key product features may not be available until a network problem is corrected or a current license is obtained. (This is the message you will receive if the number of days specified in the Problem 3 message is exceeded.) Resolution: Please refer to the resolution provided with Problem 3 above. Problem 5: My product is running in Offline mode even though I have a license with the appropriate features. What it means: The product is expecting the features to be listed in a different order and is consequently not recognizing the license. The feature list order on some product licenses has been changed on the license server, but the product must be informed of the new order to activate properly. Resolution: Open the Municipal License Administrator by selecting from the Windows Start menu: All Programs -> Bentley -> -> Municipal License Administrator In the window that appears, click the Refresh Configurations button. Then select the product license with the appropriate features, and click the Make Default button. Important: Even if the license is already set as the default, designate it as the default again. This will instruct the product to expect the features in the new order. Exit the Municipal License Administrator, and attempt to activate the product again. Please note that the Activation Status tab in the License Management Tool may show two listings for the product license with the same features but listed in a different order. One of them should display a status of Activated, however. Problem 6: Products are listed multiple times in the Activation Status tab of the License Management Tool What it means: This typically reflects attempts to activate old, incorrect, or empty feature strings. For instance, if you try to use the application without selecting a default license configuration, then activate the products with the correct feature string, you will see the program listed multiple times. Resolution: Multiple entries in the License Management Tool status section is normal. This is working as designed and does not impact the usage or features on the activated products. In addition, the order of items in the feature strings recently changed in the contracts of many users. This is shown in the screenshot above. The first and third entry are old entries from when the feature string had not been set yet and when the feature string was set to an older order, respectively. If you reactivate the license against the new feature string, both will be listed, though they will be the same. The important part is that the correct feature string shows "Activated" as the status. See "Problem 2" or "Problem 3" above for information on re-setting the default license feature string in cases where the order of the items in the feature string has changed in your contract. Even if you see a feature string that lists a different number of pipes, that does not mean that this is the version that is activated or in use. The simplest way to ascertain the features in your usage is to either check the default license configuration used in the Municipal License Administration or to go to Help > About (product name) and check the features there, such as number of pipes or inlets. You should be able to safely ignore the extra item, as only the selected default license configuration in the Municipal License Administrator will be used. The alternative would be to delete the other items from the registry editor, though this may be more trouble than it is worth. Problem 7: Product does not appear in the Municipal License Administrator, however it does show up in the License Management Tool What It Means: This typically occurs with the product when the license for the product is checked out by another user. The entry in the License Management Tool will likely show up as having zero available licenses. Resolution: The product license will need to be checked back in. This can be done in the License Checkout page of the SELECTserver, either Hosted or Deployed. The local site administrator will need to check the license back in, or the product will need to be checked back in from the machine where the license is checked out to. Once the license has been checked back in, the product will appear in the Municipal License Administrator. The product can then be licensed as normal. Note that for SELECT users, checking out the licensing is not generally needed unless the computer where you will be using the product will be disconnected from the network from a long period of time.
